• The purpose of a resume is not to get a job, but to get an interview with an employer
• The typical employer only looks at a resume for 30 to 40 seconds
Structure of an American resume
• There is not one form you can buy and fill out the necessary information like in Korea and other countries.
• You need to be creative in layout. You do not want your resume to look like everyone else’s

Activities• Specialized
skills• References
Content & Language
• Do not have to have a full sentence• Never want to use pronouns (I, my,
mine). It is implied• Do not abbreviate, unless it is
industry standard• Always start with a strong action
word

• Focus on– Important strengths and skills outside
of work that make you an excellent candidate for employment
– What makes you unique– Work and volunteer experiences– Information and words that grab the
employers attention– Not being too modest!
