Transcript of American Colonies1

Frances Lacsamana

Captain John Smith explored the coast in 1614 and named New England because the climate and soil replicated his homeland.

The Winthrop Fleet of eleven ships delivered 700 passengers to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Between 1630 through 1640 approximately 20,000 Puritans colonists came to New England.

The New England colonies granted lands to men who banded together as a corporate group to found a town.

Compact settlements were favored to concentrate in defense, support public schools, promote mutual supervision of morality and most importantly attend a local church.
