Transcript of America Compared Readings (Week 6)

Globalization –◦ The rapid movement of

goods, services, capital, ideas, music, TV programs, clothing, fast food, etc.

There are differing opinions across the world to America's domination of the globalized culture and economy. ◦ Some see it as a fascination,

while others see it as a form of hegemonic cultural, economic, and military imperialism.

During the Cold War, it was only critics of American foreign policy that referred to America as an Empire. ◦ The Soviet Union and China used this

term, but so did many non Marxist writers from Western Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

More contemporary critics of American foreign policy such as Chalmers Johnson, William Blum and Michael Hudson, now echo the earlier anti-imperialists of the Cold War era.◦ The over all argument, is that the Cold

War was a result not of Soviet, but United States aggression after WWII. This argument has become increasingly

legitimized due to post-Cold War American foreign policy.
