America ComparedImmigrants and Cities

The Great Transatlantic Migrations

• Europeans had established a pattern of migrating within their continent in search of new jobs.

• Vast open territory acquired in small, affordable pieces and new freedoms made the US a desired destination.

• Some Europeans who migrated to South America left after a few years and came to the US and Canada or returned to Europe.

The City in the Land of the Dollar

The fastest growing city in the US in the late 19th century was Chicago where the skyscraper was invented and steel frame construction was first used.

After the famous Chicago fire, the city was once again a blank slate to be rebuilt using these technologies.

With Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, a kind of world fair brought to the city in 1893, architects used neoclassic European design to “beautify” the city.
