1)Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It is a form of motor neuron disease.

2)The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death.

3) When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

Symptoms of ALS• Initial stage symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing.

• When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to become smaller. Limbs begin to look "thinner" as muscle tissue atrophies.

•Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood, the recent years have brought a wealth of new scientific understanding regarding the physiology of this disease.

Based on a research done at the Nutrition Unit , ALS Center, Limoges,CHU it was concluded that Phase Angle as a prognostic Factor for survival in ALS.

1)PrognostiCheck® illustrates where the patient is on the trajectory of the progression of ALS and shows the ‘Burden of the Illness’ the patient is experiencing. For instance if the normal Scoring value for the patient is 7 and their value is 5 the loss of 2 is the burden of disease experienced by this patient.

2) Phase angle of an entity provides a reliable and objective index and is a survival prognostic factor in several diseases.

3)Phase angle was measured on a sample of 168 ALS patients and an analysis between PA and factors like neurological, respiratory and nutritional status are considered to determine whether PA is an independent prognostic factor for survival in ALS.

4) The Phase Angle is the relationship between resistance (R) and body reactance (Xc) defined mathematically (arc tangent Xc/R expressed in degree.)

5) To access the prognostic role of phase angle in ALS patients, survival analysis based on Kaplan-Meier method using log rank test and on univariate and multivariate COX Proportional hazard model was used.

6) Baseline time was time from multidisciplinary visit(T1) to death or censoring time.

7)Studies have confirmed that Phase Angle (PA) was always significantly lower in ALS patients.

8) Phase Angle was lower in ALS malnourished patients than in non-malnourished patients.

9) Patients with PA < 2.5 degree had a significantly poorer survival rate than patients with PA >2.5.
