Ireland, it's difficult to have a whole sunny day. You get the most sunshine in May and June with 6 hours a day on average. From the end of June it drops to only 4 hours by September. There are 69 days of no sunshine at all per year. That's right: 69 whole days of completely impenetrable grey.

• In Almería there are 70 rainy days a year on average.

• In Cork 151 rainy days a year of which 75 are heavy rain.

• There are 100 foggy days a year and in Almería only 10.

• So it's not a surprise Almería's landscape is brown and Cork's so green.

• It is located in the province (County) of Almería about 30 kilometers (20 miles (millas)) north of the capital, Almería.

• Tabernas is the only desert in Europe.

• An alcazaba is a Moorish (morisco) fortification in Spain.

• In 995 Almería gained the title of medina ("city") and the Alcazaba was built.

• The Alcazaba in Almería is one of the largest in Andalucía.

• CORK or CORCAIGH in Irish Gaelic means Swamp (ciénaga ).

• Irish Gaelic is a celtic language and is the second official language in Ireland.

• In Garryduff, County (Provincia) Cork there is an example of a Celtic Ringfort.

• Ringforts are circular fortified settlements that were mostly built during the Iron Age (800 BCE–400 CE)

• Ring forts were used in agriculture, defence and industry.

• Over 45,000 sites have been identified as ringforts throughout Ireland.

• Flamenco developed as a musical style toward the end of the 15th century thanks to the gypsies in the south of Spain (Andalucia).

• Flamenco currently is a combination of song, guitar and dance.

• Tomatito (little tomato) is a famous flamenco guitarist from Almería.

• Traditional Irish music uses many instruments.• The fiddle or violin; the bodhrán ( un tambor

especial); flute or tin whistle; accordian and concertina and uillean pipes.

• In the 20th Century,there was a ‘Trad’ music revival.

• Various changes happened i.e. the beginning of ‘Trad Rock’.

• Rory Gallagher was a talented guitarist who was born on the 2nd of March 1948 and died in June 1995.

• He was born in Donegal but raised in Cork.• There is an old story about Jimi Hendrix being

asked by an interviewer after Woodstock what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world. Hendrix replied that he did not know. "Go ask Rory Gallagher”

• Gurullos is a winter stew (potaje de invierno)made with hare (liebre) or mountain rabbit (conejo de monte).

• Morcilla is a traditional spanish dish. It is the same as Irish black pudding.

• Irish Stew - Is a stew made with lamb potatoes, onion and various root vegetables (tubérculos comestibles)

• It is the national dish and is known internationally.

• Black pudding – is exactly the same (igual) as the spanish ‘morcilla’.

Vino (wine) Laujar

• Is a wine which is made in the Alpujarra mountain region in Almería.

• They produce, white, rosé and red wine.

MURPHY´S

• Murphy’s is a stout (a black beer) i.e. Irish wine .

• Compared to other stouts i.e. Guinness or Beamish (also made in Cork) it is sweeter.

• It has been described as “ a far off relative ( un pariente lejano) of chocolate milk.”

• ALMERIA – has a population of approx. 180,000 people.

• CORK – has a population of approx. 190,400 people.

• Cork is the 2nd largest city in Ireland.

• Almería is not among the 30 largest cities in Spain but it's the 5th of the 8 cities in Andalucía

• Cabo de Gata - Níjar Natural Park is the first marine-terrestrial Natural Park in Andalusia.

• The Cape (El Cabo) has many small fishing villages (pueblos de pescadores), beautiful beaches and even a hippy commune ( una comuna hippy)!!

• Cape Clear Island is Ireland's most southerly island.

• The island is 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1.5 miles (millas) wide 2.4 km and has a population of 120 people.

• It is a gaeltacht island - the first language is Irish.

• It is a paradise for bird watchers (observadores de aves).

• The traditional midsummer party in Spain is the celebration in honour of San Juan (St. John the Baptist) and takes place on June 23rd.

• It is the summer solstice (solsticio). The longest day of the year.

• Parties are organised on beaches, where bonfires (hogueras) are lit and firework (fuegos artificiales) displays take place.

HALLOWE’EN

• Hallowe’en falls on the 31st of October/1st of November.

• It is seen as an American holiday but it comes from Ireland.

• Hallowe’en or ‘Oiche shamhna’ is the Celtic New Year (Noche Vieja).

• People dress up (disfrazarse) and build Bonfires in the street.

• The Virgen del Mar is the patron saint of Almeria.

• There is a week long celebration in the city on the last week of August in honour of the saint.

• St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.

• St. Patrick’s day is celebrated on March 17th, the day of his death.

• Cork has an excellent parade every year, with street entertainers ( artistas callejeros).

is a center for the exploration of solar energy.

• It was founded in the early 1980’s and run by the centro de investigaciones de Energéticas, Medio ambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT), its located at the edge of Tabernas desert.

INDUSTRY IN CORK

• Cork City is at the heart of industry in the south of Ireland. Its main area of industry is pharmaceuticals, with Pfizer Inc. and Swiss company Novartis being big employers in the region.

• Cork is also the European headquarters of Apple Inc. where their high end computers are manufactured and their European call centre, R&D and AppleCare is hosted.

• The Andarax River is 67 kilometres (42 miles (millas)) long.

• Its entire course is within the province of Almería.

• It passes through many towns and reaches the sea just outside of the city.

• It is called a Rambla which is a River without water.

• The river Andarax only carries water after heavy rain. You can walk in it without even getting wet “andarax, andarax, pero no te mojarax”.

• The River Lee flows through Cork city and enters the Celtic Sea in Cork Harbour.

• The river is crossed by 42 bridges, 29 of which are in Cork City, and one tunnel.

• It´s 90km long.

• It floods frequently.

THE GREENHOUSESLOS INVERNADEROS

• The Almerian economy is mostly based on agriculture.

• Numerous greenhouses produce tons (toneladas) of fruit and vegetables.

• In Almería they are known as the plastic sea (el mar plástico).

• Also, the only 2 points clearly visible from space are ; the Great Barrier Reef, Australia and the Greenhouses in El Ejido, Almería.

• Despite all the differences, Almerienses and Corkonians are not so different.

• They are both in the South of the country and the people from both towns know how to have a good time.
