Angelo GilardinoBorn at Vercelli, Italy, in 1941, he studied inthe music schools of his native town (guitar,cello and composition). His concert career,running from 1958 to 1981, has stronglymarked the evolution of the guitar as aleading instrument of the 20th centurymusic: new compositions dedicated to himby authors from all the world, and premieredby him, number in hundreds. Since 1967,Edizioni Musicali Bèrben entrusted him withthe leadership of the 20th century guitarmusic series which became the most impor-tant in the world, bearing Gilardino’s name.

From 1981, he gave up with his concertcareer in order to concentrate on his work asa composer: teacher and musicologist. Sincethen, he composed and published thecollection of sixty Studi di virtuosità e ditrascendenza, acknowledged by John W.Duarte as “milestones of the new guitarrepertory”, two Sonatas, two sets ofVariations (Variazioni sulla Follia, Variazionisulla Fortuna), a Suite (Musica per l’angelodella Melancholia), other pieces such asColloquio con Andrés Segovia, Sonatine desfleurs et des oiseaux, Tríptico de las visiones,Catskill Pond, La casa del Faro, etc.; fourmulti-guitaristic Concertos (Concerto d’estate,Concierto de Córdoba, premiered at CórdobaFestival in 1994, Poema d’inverno, Concertod’autunno), and six Concertos with chamberorchestra: Concerto for guitar (Leçons deTénèbres, 1996), Concerto for mandolin andguitar (Fiori di novembre, 1997), ConcertoItaliano for four guitars (1998), Concerto forflute and guitar (La casa delle ombre, 1999),Liederkonzert for two guitars (2000), Con-certo for Guitar and Accordion (En lastierras altas), plus chamber music with guitar,including two Sonatina-Lied respectively forbassoon and guitar and violin and guitar. Hisworks are regularly performed in concert,recorded and featured as test pieces incompetitions.

As a teacher, he was appointed from 1965to 1981 at the Liceo Musicale “G.B. Viotti”at Vercelli and, from 1982, heis a professor at the StateConservatory “Antonio Vival-di” at Alessandria. From1984, he has been called tolead the post-graduatecourses at the AccademiaSuperiore Internazionale“Lorenzo Perosi” at Biella.He has given about 200courses, seminars and master-classes in various European

countries, invited by universities, academies,conservatories and festivals. In 1989, the townof Lagonegro has awarded him with honorarycitizenship as an acknowledgement of histeaching activity for the International GuitarFestival. In 1993, the University of Granada,Spain, invited him to give a course for thecelebration of the 100th anniversary of AndrésSegovia’s birth. In 1998, he was awarded theMarengo Prize by the Conservatory ofAlessandria.

As a musicologist, he has given a powerfulcontribution to the guitar repertoire of the firsthalf of the 20th century with his discoveriesand publications of important works whichwere either unknown or considered as lost,such as the Sonata para guitarra by AntonioJosé, the Variazioni by Ottorino Respighi and alarge corpus of guitar works written for AndrésSegovia by Spanish, French and Britishcomposers during the Twenties and theThirties. Since 2002, he has been the generaleditor of The Andrés Segrovia Archive, theseries published by Edizioni Musicali Bèrbenand devoted to those works. He has alsoreconstructed the Concerto for guitar andOrchestra of the Russian composer BorisAsafiev, published by Editions Orphee. As aconsequence of these rescues of his, a newpowerful addition has been gifted to thehistorical repertoire of the guitar in the 20thcentury.

In 1997, he was appointed as the artisticdirector of the “Andrés Segovia” Foundationof Linares, Spain, the Segovia Museum.

The Italian Guitar Congress has awardedhim the prize “Golden Guitar” three times(1997, 1998, 2000), respectively for his com-positions, teaching and for his musical search.

He has written two books dealing with theprinciples of guitar technique. He haspublished a handbook devoted to thosecomposers who aim to write for guitar, but whodo not play this instrument. He has alsopublished a handbook of guitar history and arelevant number of essays and articles.

The prizes received by his pupils in theinternational competitions, as well as hismemberships in the juries, are countless.
