FOR CHILD SURVIVAL

Introduction• The ‘Integrated Management of Neonatal and

Childhood Illnesses’ program was launched as a pilot in Lalitpur District in the year 2005. This was further adapted in Uttar Pradesh, and a Comprehensive Child Survival Programme – UP (CCSP-UP) was launched during the year 2007-08.

• The three main elements of this programme are

a) Training of functionaries

b) Availability of primary health care at doorsteps

c) strengthening referral system.

• “Supportive Supervision of Comprehensive Child Survival Program (CCSP-SS) in Aligarh District” was launched by the Department of Sociology & Social Work, AMU, Aligarh in collaboration with UNICEF, Lucknow.

• The project was initiated in Six Blocks of Aligarh District viz. Atrauli, Dhanipur, Gangiri, Jawan, Khair and Lodha during Phase-I (July 2009 to June 2010). Subsequently, remaining six blocks viz. Akrabad, Bijoli, Chandaus, Gonda, Iglas and Tappal were undertaken during Phase-IIa from July 2010-March 2011 and Phase-IIb (April 2011-September 2011).

• The ongoing Phase III is entitled “Strengthening of CCSP through Supportive Supervision (S-CCSP-SS) in Aligarh District” from 18th Oct 2011 which is nearing completion by 31st March 2013.

• The Project with encouraging outcomes is acknowledged as “Aligarh Model”

Impact on Community Practices:

• Two surveys (Baseline & End line) were carried out during July – August 2009 and November – December 2011. Both the surveys were integral part of the S-CCSP-SS project in Aligarh District. Data were collected using 25 variables in the baseline survey and 35 variables in the end line survey.

• The trends focused are institutional delivery, immediate bath after birth, initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding and babies given pre-lacteal.
