MIXTURE

• A combination of 2 or more substances that can be separated by physical means– Chicken Soup– Rocky road Ice Cream– Soil

PURE SUBSTANCE

• cannot be separated by physical means (sorting, filtering, heating, cooling),

• All particles making it up are the same

• ALWAYS HOMOGENOUS!– Gold– Table Salt

HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE

• A mixture that has the same composition throughout.– UNOPENED can of soda– Alloys– Kool-Aid– Salt water

HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE

• A mixture in which the composition is not the same throughout.– Chicken Noodle Soup– Italian Salad Dressing

ELEMENT

• A substance made up of only one type of atom.

• Each has a unique symbol.– Silver (Ag)– Gold (Au)– Hydrogen (H)– Oxygen (O)

COMPOUND• A pure substance that is made of 2 or more

elements chemically combined.• Can only be separated by chemical means

(burning, chemical reactions).• Smallest part called a molecule.• Each has a unique formula.
