Aim #2: How do historians develop arguments from images? Pictures of Native Americans from European points of view and looking at Diego Rivera’s mural, Colonial Domination

Day One: Students will be arranged in five groups and assigned a category of analysis (political, economic, social, environmental, or religious). Then using a handout as their guide (and their textbooks), students will look for ways to make arguments about what the images reveal about their assigned category.

Students must select at least 3 images in order to construct their historical argument.

Day Two: Students will be given a quadrant of Diego Rivera’s mural titled, Colonial Domination and asked to work in groups. Students will look for symbolism in his paintings and asked to examine their quadrant for its meaning before looking at the mural in its entirety.
