Chair’s Corner
This year, we had an extremely successful Midwest Regional Conference (MRC) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). A total of 193 chemical engineers attended our confer-ence and many high school students were introduced to the field of Chemical Engineering. This conference and our local section are fueled from volunteer effort and it is impressive to see contributions from so many people go forward to make our local section a key focal point for Chicagoland Chemical Engineers. I know we have said many thanks to all of the volunteers for their efforts to the MRC, yet we need to continually thank and recognize those who contribute and volunteer to our profession.
Our April meeting this year is our Annual Poster Symposium where area Chemical Engineering academic departments showcase their research and design pro-jects. Also, we will announce the Thiele Award recipient, McCormack Awardees, and Scholarship Recipients.
Our guest speaker is Prof. Lisa Bullard from NC State. She will talk about organi-zational culture and challenges of creating a successful organizational cul-ture. What is an organizational culture? It seems to be one of those intangible fea-tures that most can define yet there is little agreement on what it actually is. I found an interesting article summarizing what organizational culture is linked here (https://hbr.org/2013/05/what-is-organizational-culture). The key takeaways that I found were organizational culture is consistent observable patterns of organizational be-havior yet it is dynamic in response to external and internal changes. One qualifier of success I have learned in my career is that organizational culture must hold eth-ics and safety to a high standard to be successful. High standards of ethics and safety are paramount attributes of any successful organization as well as in our In-stitute and this is well illustrated in our Code of Ethics.
AIChE Code of Ethics https://www.aiche.org/about/code-ethics
I am excited to see all the various projects from the area universities and to learn more about organization culture from Dr. Bullard!

“Open the Front Door, Close
the Back Door:
The Impact of Organizational Culture on Recruiting and
Retention”
Dr. Lisa Bullard
Abstract: Every organization, whether it’s a chemical company or an academic de-partment, has a unique culture based on its history, people, geography, and a myriad of other factors. While some organizations have a long history with a well-established culture and tradi-tions, other organizations that have been recently formed are faced with the challenge of creating a culture from scratch. The success of an organiza-tion in creating and sustaining a desira-ble culture can have a significant im-pact on recruiting, retention, and gen-eral satisfaction of its people. This talk describes different responses to cul-ture, examines the impact of positive and negative cultures, and offers a case study of one industrial organiza-tion that does an exceptional job at-tracting and retaining young profes-sionals through intentional focus on its work culture. Recommendations to ex-amine and enhance your organizational culture will be relevant to both industri-al practitioners and students.

Young Professionals News
Career Panel at UIC
YPC arranged a career panel for the AIChE student chapter of UIC on March 15. Four young professionals spoke to UIC chemical engineering students about life after school, relocating for a job, tips for interview-ing, networking, and relevant course work. The panel lasted an hour and a half, and we got positive feedback from the students. We hope to continue this event in the future!
Graduation Party and Social
Please join AIChE YPC in congratulating the lo-cal chemical engineering graduates with a so-cial in April! Location and date TBD. 2017 Graduates will have the chance to win prizes in a raffle! We hope you can join us—please watch for updates on the YPC mailing list!
