INTRODUCTION India is an agriculturally important

country. Two-thirds of it’s population is engaged in agricultural activities. Agriculture is a primary activity , which produces most of the food that we consume. Besides food grains, it also produces raw material for various industries.

AgricultureAgriculture is the

cultivation of animals, plants, fungi and other life forms for food, fiber, and other products used to sustain life. Agriculture was the key implement in the rise of sedentary human civilization .

Intensive Subsistence Farming• This type of farming is practiced in

areas of• high population pressure on land. It

is labor-intensive.

Primitive Subsistence Farming

This type of farming is still practiced in few

pockets of India.This type of farming

depends upon monsoon natural fertility of the soil and suitability of

other environmental conditions

to the crops grown.

JHUMMINGThe ‘slash and burn’ agriculture is known as ‘Milpa’ in Mexico and Central America ‘Conuco’ in Venezuela, ‘Roca 'in Brazil, ‘Masole’ in Central Africa, ‘Ladang’ in Indonesia, ‘Ray’ in Vietnam. In India, this primitive form of cultivation is called ‘Bear’ or ‘Dahiya’ in Madya Pradesh, ‘Padu’ or ‘Panda’ in Andhra Pradesh, ‘Puma Debi’ or ‘Kaman’ or ‘Bringa’ in Orissa.

COMMERCIAL FARMING

Commercial Agriculture refers to a process of large-scale production of crops for sale, intended for widespread distribution to wholesalers or retail outlets. In commercial farming crops such as wheat, maize, tea, coffee, sugarcane, cashew, rubber, banana, cotton are harvested and sold into world markets. Commercial agriculture includes livestock production and livestock grazing.

CROPPING PATTERN

India has three cropping seasons-

RABI. KHARIF. ZAID.

THESE are also reflected in agricultural practices and cropping pattern in the country.Various types of food and fiber crops ,vegetables and fruits ,spices and and condiments, etc

SECOND MOST IMPORTANT CEREAL CROP.IT IS THE MAIN FOOD CROP IN NORTH AND NORTH WESTERN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

MILLETS

BAJRA GROWS WELL ON SANDY SOILS AND SHALLOW BLACK SOIL.

RAJASTHAN, U.P. , MAHARASHTRA, GUJRAT AND HARYANA ARE THE REGIONS GOOD FOR BAJRA PRODUCTION.

JOWAR , BAJRA AND RAGI ARE THE IMPORTANT MILLETS GROWN IN INDIA.

MAIZEIt is a crop which is used both as food and fodder:1.) REQUIREMENTS:It is a kharif crop which requires temperature between 210C to 270C and grows well in old alluvial soil. In some states like Bihar maize is grown in rabi season also.

PULSESIndia is the largest producer as well as the consumer of pulses in the world. These are the major source of protein in a vegetarian diet. 1.) TYPES OF PULSES: Major pulses that are

grown in India are tur (arhar), urad, moong, masur , peas and gram.

2.) REQUIREMENTS: Pulses need less

moisture and survive even in dry conditions.

COFFEE

INDIA PRODUCES ABOUT FOUR PERCENT OF THE WORLD’S COFFEE PRODUCTION.INDIAN COFFEE IS KNOWN IN THE WORLD FOR ITS GOOD QUALITY.

TEA INDIA IS THE LEADING PRODUCER AS WELL AS

EXPORTER OF TEA IN THE WORLD.

TYPE-a) TEA CULTIVATION IS THE EXAMPLE OF PLANTANTION

AGRICULTURE.b) IT IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT BEVERAGE CROP INTRODUCED IN

INDIA INITIALLY BY THE BRITISH.AREAS-

a) MAJOR TEA PRODUCING STATES ARE ASSAM, HILLS OF DARJAND JALPAIGURI DISTRICTS, WEST BENGAL, TAMIL NADU AND KERELA.

b) APART FROM THESE, HIMANCHAL PRADESH, UTTRAKHAND, MEGHALAYA, ANDRAPRADESH AND TRIPURA ARE ALSO TEA PRODUCING STATES IN THE COUNTRY.

COTTONIndia is believed to be the original home of the cotton plant . Cotton is one the

main raw materials for cotton textile industry.

India is the third – largest producer of cotton in the world. Cotton grows well in drier parts of black cotton soil of the Deccan plateau.

It requires high temperature , irrigation, 210 frost- free days & bright sunshine for its growth

Jute It is known as the golden fiber . Jute grows well

on well- drained fertile soils in the food plains where soils renewed every year .

High temperature is required during the time of growth. West Bengal , Bihar , Assam , Orissa& Meghalaya are the are major jute producing states.

It is used in making gunny bags ,mats, ropes , yarn , carpets and other artifacts .

Due to its high cost, it is losing market to synthetic fibers & packing materials, particularly the nylon .
