President’s ReportHOW YA GOIN’ FRIENDS?
G’day everybody our June show with Brian Letton and Cactus Martens was a pretty good show. There weren’t as many people there as we expected. Our July show was Lee Brocky and Outback-Overdrive and also we had the winners from the Len Wakefield memorial fund there to receive their trophies and goodies. The winner from under twelves was Brandon Kent from Renmark and the winner from under sixteens was Amy Sherrah from Seacliff Park. These two youngsters were very pleased. On that same day Nathan Bruhn made and appearance along with new-comer Ella Radbone. It was a busy day.
Moving on, in August will be our 23rd Annual General Meeting. A number of nominations were received for Vice President, Treasurer and Entertainment Officer and three general committee positions.
I would like to thank our great Committee for the work that they have performed on these past months and let’s not forget our volunteers who help us set up and clean at the end of the day and thanks also to the kitchen ladies for their work as well .
Thanks to Raelz and Bev for doing the membership and June and Bryan Sparks for selling those Raffle tickets and cards, also many thanks to the Slovenian people behind the bar for their support and to the members who donate money and prizes to help our great club.
Well I hope I have covered just about everybody and everything so there is no more to say so cheerio for now.
KEEP IT COUNTRY.
Your President, Russell Byrne.

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - June 2012In June we had the very talented Brian Letton. Everyone seems to enjoy his music. He sings true Country songs and bush ballads, Australian songs about the bush.
He does use backing music, but he does really play guitar and sing on the day. Quite a few artists are now doing their shows that way.
After our show day he headed for the Barmera Festival, which is still going very strong thanks to Dot and Murray Mac and their committee.
Brian’s back up person on the day was the ever popular Cactus Martens from Port Pirie. Cactus used to have a band named ‘Detour’ he sang very well also, he headed off to Barmera and was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - July 2012It’s halfway through the year and what a great start with Lee Brocky and his band. We hadn’t seen Lee for a while so it was good to see them again at the club.
It was a special day as we had the awardees of the Len Wakefield Memorial Award. This year thanks to Evonne Rayson’s fund raising we were able to select two youngsters.
The first, Brandon Kent from Renmark, 10 years old, terrific guitar playing and singing, a very friendly young man full of confidence. We need young men in Country Music, hope he continues on.
Our next awardee was Amy Sherrah, Wow, I have seen Amy a few times before, now a very confident performer. Once again a very friendly young lady aged 15yrs. Steve Sherrah, her father, played guitar for her and the band joined in. Brandon chose to play without the band, and I must congratulate the audience for giving both artists their attention, thank you all.
Having the awards the club feels we are helping to keep Country Music going, that’s why we choose young people.
Thanks to Russell, Rhonda, June and Bryan for their selection at the Barmera festival. A special thanks to Barmera for allowing us to do so.
We had two great walk-ups, once again youngsters. We had Ella Radbone, wow, 8 years old, played guitar and
sang a real cutie, full of talent, then along came Nathan Bruhn, he did a great job also. He has overcome his nerves now and did a great choice of songs.
It was a very good day.
See everyone next time, it will be the AGM.
Jay J Shannon (lead vocals, back up, vocals, acoustic & electric guitars)
With more than 30 years’ experience in the music industry, Jay J has an extensive following throughout SA, Victoria and NSW. He has won a number of vocal awards in all 3 states as well as national awards in Tamworth, and with his wife Debi, has been recognised for his song-writing ability. He has been a regular performer at country music festivals for many years and spends several months each year on tour in rural areas. His latest CD ‘Sentimental Friend’ is proving to be very popular.
Debi McLachlan (bass guitar and backup vocals) Debi is a relative newcomer when it comes to performing country music. However she grew up in a household where it was continually played (what do you expect when her dad was a truckie)?. She has a great love for country
music, and after many years as Jay J’s manager is now an accomplished bass guitarist and is also performing the odd song on the mike. She has travelled extensively with Jay J since 1986 and is well known on the country music circuit.

Winchester at Blackwood RSL July 21. Graham, Jan, Jay J, Debi and Michael. Martin was not available.
She has performed at various country music festivals and has proved very popular with all audiences. Although Winchester is Debi’s first band, she has performed with Jay J as a duo for several years.
Jan Murphy - Bass Guitar Jan has been playing for over 30 years and has had substantial success performing with ‘The Three Decades’, ‘Edjon In’, Compact Country and the Rustlers. In fact Jan was involved in the promotion and release of the Rustlers first CD ‘Broken Pieces’.
With influences from Patsy Cline, Shania Twain and Don Williams, Jan has the versatility to perform a wide range of music from Country to 50s and 60s Rock’n’Roll.
Jan has many country music awards to her credit and has travelled Australia extensively performing at many Country Music Festivals including Tamworth. She has also donated a significant amount of time performing at various charity events including Cancer Research Fundraisers at Kapunda, Flying Doctors Fundraisers at the Blanchetown Country Music Campout and various shows for Angel Flight.
Throughout her career Jan has performed with many great Australian Country Music Artists including playing in the support band for Troy Cassar Daley in 2000.
Martin Krollig (Drums) Martin started drumming in 1960. Playing in rock ‘n’ roll bands for many years, he has now branched out into 60/40, jazz and country.
He is one of the few drummers that can sing.
Martin was with Courthouse Connection for a few years and more recently with Kindred Spirit.
Michael Micallef - Rhythm guitar and Vocals After playing guitar for over 12 years and developing a distinctive finger picking style, Michael began performing in the country music circuit with walkups at many Adelaide Country Music Clubs.
Shortly after these performances he began playing at various Festivals including the Murraylands Music Festival and the Fleurieu Folk Festival eventually receiving a third place in the Instrumental section at the Barmera Country Music Awards. Michael has also donated his performances at the Blanchetown Country Music Campout.
Michael’s musical preferences include country and blues with influences from such greats as John Hammond, Hank Williams Jnr, James Blundell and the Everly Brothers.
Originally from Southwark in England Michael grew up in Broken Hill, NSW. Michael is married with 2 children and now lives in Pooraka. Michael joined ‘Jay J Shannon & Winchester in September 2007.
Graham Cross - lead guitar and vocals Graham started off jamming with friends, one of which was Iain ‘Cutty’ Carlin of Southern Reign (vocals and rhythm Guitar), in the 1980’s which sparked the band ‘Southern Image’.

After entering some talent quests, Graham was invited to play rhythm guitar in a country cabaret band, ‘Bruno and Memphis’. From the Bluegrass set of this band, Graham went on to form a hot Bluegrass outfit with Dwayne Elix, called ‘Honky Stomp’. When Dwayne departed for the
bright lights of Sydney, Graham rekindled the old magic with Cutty and reached out for fresh pickers forming ‘Customline’. from Southern Reign bio. Graham also plays in Compact Country.
