Connolly is always searching for new andexciting ways to expand her culinary empire, yet remain true to the fresh ingredients andcooking style that made her a success.
After 14 years in business, everyoneknows what a terrific dining experienceawaits them at Victorias Delights (12 S.Washington St.) in downtown Oxford.
If they didnt, Victorias Delightswouldnt have won Best Restaurantand Best Chef in the Oxford Leaders2010 Best of the Best competition. Nor
would the bistro have earned the Ex-cellence in Dining award from the Ox-ford Chamber of Commerce.
But did you know you can enjoy thatsame great bistro food at Victorias De-lights Express, located at Miloschs Pal-ace Chrysler Jeep Dodge (3800 S. LapeerRd.) in Orion?
The express cafes been open sinceDec. 28, 2010 and operates from 8 a.m. to5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sand-wiches, salads, soups and quiche areavailable.
All our favorites are down there,Connolly said. Everythings made freshdaily in Oxford, then brought to the expresscafe. It has my name on it, so I make sure itsfresh and of the highest quality.
Victorias Delights express makes for aconvenient, healthy and tasty dining option
for Miloschs customers and employees.A lot of our customers are Milosch cus-
tomers as well, Connolly said. But you dont have to be car-shopping or
having your vehicle serviced at Milosch inorder to enjoy the express cafe.
Everyone is welcome to either grab somefood to go or stay and dine in the comfort-able seating area.
To compliment her bistros southern ex-pansion, Connolly extended her reach to thenorth when, in November, she was appointedchef and house caterer for Hunters RidgeHunt Club.
I am brushing up on my wild game cook-ing skills and developing some new recipes,
Connolly said. Watch for pheasant and wildmushroom ravioli and venison chili, amongothers.
Although Connolly enjoys cooking andcreating culinary delightsfor her patrons, she alsoenjoys sharing herknowledge of thekitchen with others.
She and her mother,Kathy, are working on acookbook, due outaround Mothers Day,
thats a compilation of allthe recipes demon-strated during themonthly cooking classesshes conducted at herbistro for four years.
It should have over200 recipes, all tried andtrue, Connolly said. Were very excitedabout that.
The cookbook willcontain a little bit of everything breakfasts, lunches, dinners, appetizers and desserts.
It will include vegetarian dishes becauseabout 30 percent of my customers are veg-etarians, she said.
In addition to her monthly cookingclasses, Connolly will soon debut ChefsTable classes, which will include lunch and
be limited to 10 people. These will be smaller, more intimate
classes more one-on-one, she said.Victorias Delights continues to use the
freshest and most local ingredients possible. This year, Connolly plans to expand the
herb garden behind her restaurant. Main-tained by her Master Gardener mother, thegarden provides the restaurant with all theherbs it uses including mint, taragon, oregano and eight different types of basil.
All of the produce used at Victorias De-lights is purchased either at the Pontiac Farm-ers Market or Eastern Market in Detroit.
The bistros emphasis on Michigan-madeproducts continues with offering of 14 winesand just as many beers, all fermented andbrewed in the Great Lakes state. These Michi-gan products are in addition to Victorias ex-tensive wine and cocktail list with offeringsfrom around the country and the world.
As always, Victorias Delights continuesto be active in the community, donating to avariety of local charities along with Oxfordschool fund-raisers and clubs like DECA.
Connollys grateful to her staff, whoseconsistency and loyalty have kept her in busi-ness and allowed her to grow.
Its still working after all these years, she said. My staff is just as passionate as Iam about this restaurant.
Those who dont feel like cooking or eat-ing at home for Easter this year are invited toenjoy a traditional holiday brunch at Victoriasfrom 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, April 24.
For more info about Victorias Delights, from the menu that changes with the sea-sons to monthly wine dinners, call (248) 969-

Thinking about throwing out yourbroken vacuum cleaner?
Vacuum Works, located at 2549 S.Lapeer might be able to save you somemoney.
In business in Lake Orion for 30 years,Vacuum Works has no set fees and believesin quick effective repairs.
There is no set labor charge becauseevery vacuum is a different challenge, saidOwner Stacy Schneider. A job that takes
10 minutes shouldnt cost 50 bucks. We offer free estimates, and we do
swift, honest work.Schneider, who is also a member of the
Orion Chamber of Commerce, said part ofthe reason he keeps the costs down andthe work down to earth is that heunderstands what its like to live in thecommunity of Lake Orion. Hes lived here, married here, and raised a family here.
When customers come to the store, they arent going to get the glitz and glamcheesy salesman who is going to try to sellthe highest priced vacuum, said Schneider.I live in this community, I see mycustomers around and I want to establishhonest relationships with the people in LakeOrion, because this is my home too.
Commission is not what motivates ushere, we offer concerned consultants who
Vacuum Works offers fair prices, honest laborwill match your needs to a product orservice.
This year, Schneider plans to begincomputerizing everything in the store, fromold records to sales. He said this was aneffort to make the experience of shoppingat Vacuum Works a smoother, morepleasant one - something the past ownerdid not concern himself with.
The guy who used to run the place kindof checked out for the last few years he
was here, and I want to tell people that thisis not that place anymore - weve cleanedthis place up substantially since he washere, said Schneider. We want tocomputerize so we have a greaterawareness of customerss history and thatof their machines so we can get thecustomer in and out as fast as they need.
I plan on keeping this place here as longas the community will support me, and Ijust hope people can see that when theyshop here theyre supporting a worthycause. Theyre supporting me, my familyand the economy here in Lake Orion.
Vacuum works can be reached at (248)393-9950.
Theyre open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. onMonday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, ad 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Owners Stacy Schneider and Mark Kuzoff display some of their w ares.

JEWELRY
By David MorganSTAFF WRITER
Been ollowing the gold and silver market
lately? Well i you have a jewelry box, a
lock box ull o gold or a coee can ull
o old coins, you should be, according
to Ohio Valley Refnery spokesperson
John Miller. The gold and silver markets
have not been this strong or over 30
years said Miller. Typically when the
U.S. dollar is weak and the economy is
at, gold and silver markets soar. Thats
good news i you are sitting on a ewgold necklaces or an old class ring says
Miller.
Next week, starting Tuesday at
9am and every day next week through
Saturday, the Ohio Valley Refnery is
setting up a satellite refnery right here in
Waterford at the Comfort Inn. During
their 5 day stay, anyone can bring gold,
silver or platinum items and turn them in
or immediate payment, explains John
Miller. Just about everybody has some
amount o gold or silver just lying around
collecting dust and this week anybody can
sell theirs direct to our refnery. Typically
selling direct to a refnery is reserved or
larger wholesale customers like jewelry
stores, pawn shops and laboratories says
Miller. We are changing how business
is done, he explains we want to do
business with everybody so we took our
business to the streets. Our teams visit
various cities around the country hosting
5 day events and allowing the general
public to take advantage o our services.
The turnout has been overwhelming
says Miller. Usually each day is busier
than the previous day. It seems once
people come to us and sell something,
they are so amazed what an old ring
or gold coin is worth, they go home
and start digging around or more and
telling relatives, riends and neighbors.
Its like a eeding renzy by the third day.
People line up with everything rom gold
jewelry to sterling silver atware sets to
old coins. I think during this bad economy
everybody can use extra money, but most
people say they are taking advantage o
selling direct to our refnery because o
the higher prices we pay.
During this special event, anyone is
welcome to bring all types o gold, silver
and platinum to the refnery and turn it
in or instant payment. The types o items
they will accept include all gold jewelry,
gold coins, gold ounces, dental gold,
old coins made beore 1965 including
silver dollars, halves, quarters and dimes,
anything marked sterling including
atware sets, tea pots, silver bars, silver
ounces and all industrial precious metals.
What should you expect i you go
to the event to sell your gold and/or
silver? Just gather up all gold, silver and
platinum in any orm. I you are not sure
i its gold or silver, bring it in and they
will test it or ree. When you arrive at
the event you will be asked to fll out a
simple registration card and will be issued
a number. Seating will be available.
When your number is called you will be
escorted to a table where your items will
be examined, tested and sorted. This only
takes a ew minutes, using their expertise
and specialized equipment. Items will be
counted and/or weighed. The value o
the items will be determined based on
up to the minute market prices. Live eeds
will be available at the event displaying
current market prices o all precious
metals. I you choose to sell your items,
they will be bagged and tagged and you
will be escorted to the cashier to collect
your payment. Waiting time to sell your
items may range rom just a ew minutes
to 1 hour, so bring something to read.
I you are the owner o a jewelry store,
pawn shop, dentist ofce or a dealer you
are encouraged to call ahead to make
an appointment with the smelt master to
discuss their special dealer programs.
They can be reached during Refnery
hours at (217) 787-7767.Ohio Valley Refnery will open or
business Tuesday rom 9am6pm. The
event continues every day through next
Saturday. No appointment is needed or
the general public.

Got Coin? It might be just the time to
cash in. Next week, starting Tuesday
and continuing through Saturday, the
International Collectors Association in
conjunction with the Ohio Valley Gold
& Silver Refnery will be purchasing all
types o silver and gold coins direct rom
the public. All types are welcome and the
event is ree.
Collectors will be on hand to identiy
and sort your coins. Then the quality or
grade will be determined. The better thegrade the more they are worth, according
to collectors I talked to. With the silver
and gold markets high, prices o older
coins are too. Any coins minted beore
1965 in the U.S. are 90% silver, except
nickels and pennies.
The coins worth is determined by the
rarity and the grade. Old silver dollars
are worth a great premium right now,
even well worn heavily circulated ones
are bringing good premiums. Franklin
and Kennedy hal dollars, Washington
quarters, Mercury and Roosevelt dimes
are all worth many times the ace value.
While older types like Seated Liberty,
Standing Liberties, and Barber coins are
worth even more.
Gold coins are really worth a lot
right now, according to Brian Eades o
the International Collectors Association.
This country didnt start minting coins
until 1792 says Eades. He explained,
Beore that, people would trade goods
using gold dust and nuggets. Some
shop keepers would take more gold
than needed to pay or items purchased.
There was no uniorm system o making
change.
The government opened the frst
mints and began distributing the coins
in 1792. By the beginning o the 19th
century, coins and paper currency were
wide spread and our monetary system
was here to stay. In 1933 Roosevelt
required all banking institutions to turn
in all gold coins. Once all banks turned
in this gold, the president raised the
gold standard rom $20.00 per ounce to
$33.00 per ounce. This was his way o
stimulating the economy during the great
depression. However, gold coins were
never redistributed ater the recall. But not
all gold coins were turned in. Many olks
during that time didnt completely trust the
government and chose to keep their gold
said Eades.
These gold coins are sought ater by
collectors today and bring many times
the ace value. Any gold coins with the
mint marks o CC, D or O will bring nice
premiums. Collectors at the event will be
glad to show you where to look. Other
types o coins will also be purchased
including oreign coins, Indian cents, two
cent pieces, hal dimes, three cent pieces
and bualo nickels to name a ew.
Collectors warn people against
trying to clean their coins, as signifcant
damage can be done and the coins value
lessened.
