Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is a very common situation in Florida Why is this?

Rain Sensor (RS)

•RS can bypass the timersettings, when therehas been sufficient rain.

Timer

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Irrigation is controlled by a timer

Expanding Disks

Presenter
Presentation Notes
A: Hygroscopic disks absorb water and expand proportionally to rainfall amount. They activate a switch that interrupts the programmed irrigation cycle B: settings 1/8, ¼, ½, ¾, and 1 in. C: dry out: weather conditions and vent ring opening (completely opened)

OBJECTIVESa) Measure the dry out periods of 2 RSs

b) Estimate the dry out periods of 3 soil texturesthrough a soil water balance model (Wave)

c) Compare a) vs b)

RS are SD from Soil Type: Always!

CONCLUSIONS• The dry out periods of the tested RSs were shorter

than those of the different soil types modeled

• RSs: limited usefulness under Florida conditions

• An electronic mechanism that could delay thereturn of the RS to the allowing irrigation mode isrecommended

• This could greatly improve the functionality, watersaving potential, and acceptance of RSs

Sensor/transmitter and receiver/controller connected to the timer Vent ring: completely opened Advantages: quicker and easier installation, and additional mounting locations to choose from (up to 300 ft away from the receiver), especially for sites that present difficulty in routing wire as well as for retrofit applications Disadv: we will see
