OFFICIALCOURSEDESCRIPTIONThiscourseexaminesdifferentformsofinequalityinBrazilandsomeoftheresponsestothoseinequalitiesgivenbyactivists.Studentswilllearnaboutsignificanttheoreticalapproachestosocialandeconomicdisparity,whilestudyingfirsthandhowactivistsinBrazilhaveorganizedassociationsandsocialmovementstoalleviatepovertyandotherformsofsocialinjustice.Thecoursehasthreeinterrelatedgoals.1)Tobetterunderstandinequality,studentswillusethecitiesofSalvadordaBahiaandRiodeJaneiro,andaruralareanearItacaré,inthestateofBahia,ascasestudiesthatprovideempiricalknowledgeandspecificityinrelationtoglobaltrends;combiningfieldworkandcoursework,wewilldrawcomparisonsbetweenBrazilandotherinternationalsites.2)Thecoursewillinvitestudentstocreativelyexploreactivismasaresponsetoinequality.Towardstheseends,studentwilllearntothinkcriticallyaboutsomeofthethemesthatunderpininternationalactivism.Whilestudentsdeconstructcertainformsofactivismasproblematic,theywillalsoseekinspirationforbuildingamorejustsocietybylisteningcarefullyandlearningfromtheworkoftheBrazil-basedgroupsweencounter.3)Thisisaresearch-intensivecoursewhichwillallowstudentstolearnand/orhonethecoresocialscienceskillsofobservation,unstructuredinterviewing,writingfieldnotes,and,integratingthese,ethnography.Withintheembeddedstudyabroadcontextandthecondensedformat,itisalsoachanceforstudentstoengageinstimulatingandmemorablediscussionswitheachotheraboutapproachestoinequality,towardcriticalanalysisofwhattheyaresimultaneouslylearninginthefieldandintheinterdisciplinaryscholarshipaddressingpoverty.Incombination,studentswilldevelopfieldobservation,analysis,andwritingskillsinthefashionofprofessionalanthropologistsandotherethnographicresearchers.

unstructuredinterviewing,takingfieldnotes,andintegratingtheseintoafinalcriticalessay.

TEACHINGMETHODSThis class combines teachingand learning strategies,with threepre-departure classesthat will include lectures, video screenings, practice exercises (for observation,unstructuredinterviewing,andwritingfieldnotes),andclassdiscussion;abookreview;fieldclassesthatwillincludevisitsandunstructuredinterviewingoflocalactivists,alongwith lectures, small group work, and discussion; and ethnographic observations andwrite-up.

ASSESSMENTMETHODS25% PriortodepartureforBrazil,youwillreadeitherDancingwiththeDevilin

theCityofGod:RiodeJaneiroontheBrinkorBlackWomenAgainsttheLandGrabandwillwriteanapproximately1000word,single-spacedcriticalreviewofthebook.Thereviewshouldstatethebook’smainargument(s),discusstheevidencethattheauthorusestosupportit,andaddressstrengthsandweaknesses.DetailedinstructionsareavailableonBrightspace.PleaseuploadthereviewbyMay12th(thedaybeforedeparture).

20% Youwillkeepdailyfieldnotesofatleasttwosingle-spacedtypedpagesperdayforeverydayofourtrip,includingthetraveldays.Theideaisforyoutohaveaspacetodocumentobservationsofandunstructuredinterviewswiththeactivistswewillmeet,reflectontheseexperiences,andkeeparunningrecordthatcanbeusedtodevelopyourfinalcriticalessay.Inthisway,notesareintendedasaplaceforyoutobegintoworkoutsomeofthecomplexissueswewilladdressinthecourse.Asimplesummaryofwhatwedidonagivendaywillonlyyieldapassinggradeontheassignment.Youshouldbeusingyournotesasaplaceforcriticalreflection.Youcankeepyourfieldnotesinlong-handifyouwouldlike,butmustuploadthemstoBrightspacenolaterthanJune3rd.

20% Onceduringthecourse,youwillberesponsibleforleadingdiscussionon

oneofthechaptersandvideosinEncounteringPoverty.Youandyourgroupwillequitablydividethelabourofleadingdiscussion.Eachofyouisexpectedtotalkforthesameamountoftimeinclassandtoengageyourpeersinasustaineddiscussionofthematerial.Wewilltalkmoreaboutcriteriafordiscussionleadingatthethirdpre-departureclasssessionandtherewillbeadiscussionhandoutonBrightspaceforadditionalguidelines.

35% FinalEssay.Youwillwriteupyourobservationsandfieldnotes,and

developthemintoacriticalessayattheendofthecourse,whichwillbetypedanduploadedtoBrightspacenolaterthanJune10th.Theessayshouldbeatleasteightpagesdouble-spaced.Inyouressayyouwillcriticallyreflectonthemajorthemesoftheclass,anduseyourexperiencestodiscussoneofthesethemesindepth.YoumustmakereferencetoallofourreadingsaswellastoyourethnographicobservationsinBrazil.Seefinalessayhandoutformoredetailsandgradingcriteria.

BewareofAcademicFraud!Academicfraudisanactcommittedbyastudenttodistortthemarkingofassignments,tests,examinations,andotherformsofacademicevaluation.AcademicfraudisneitheracceptednortoleratedbytheUniversity.Anyonefoundguiltyofacademicfraudisliabletosevereacademicsanctions.Hereareafewexamplesofacademicfraud:

• engaginginanyformofplagiarismorcheating;• presentingfalsifiedresearchdata;• handing inanassignmentthatwasnotauthored, inwholeor inpart,bythestudent;

• submittingthesameassignmentinmorethanonecourse,withoutthewrittenconsentoftheprofessorsconcerned.

Inrecentyears,thedevelopmentoftheInternethasmadeitmucheasiertoidentifyacademicplagiarism.ThetoolsavailabletoyourprofessorsallowthemtotracetheexactoriginofatextontheWeb,usingjustafewwords.Incaseswherestudentsareunsurewhethertheyareatfault,itistheirresponsibilitytoconsultthe“WritingandStyleGuideforUniversityPapersandAssignments.”Itcanbefoundat:http://socialsciences.uottawa.ca/undergraduate/writing-style-guidePersonswhohavecommittedorattemptedtocommit (orhavebeenaccomplicesto) academic fraud will be penalized. Here are some examples of the academicsanctions,whichcanbeimposed:

• agradeof“F”fortheassignmentorcourseinquestion;• anadditionalprogramrequirementofbetween3and30credits;• suspensionorexpulsionfromtheFaculty.
