A unique combination of physical line and service verification
Acterna DSL-370 DSL Copper and Services Tester
Network providers must operate several
DSL variants simultaneously to meet
the demands of their residential and
business customers within the con-
straints of their underlying access
network. These organizations also
need to be capable of introducing new
services at any time. However, most of
the available tools do not support all
the possible DSL options or stages
involved in providing the customer
with a DSL service.
The Acterna DSL-370 delivers a high
degree of flexibility by providing physi-
cal line testing and modem testing in a
single instrument. The DSL-370 is the
only instrument available on the market
today that can test both the physical
and service layers of the network with
equal ease.
The DSL-370 is the only tool on the
market combining such comprehensive
and accurate testing for qualifying,
commissioning and troubleshooting
xDSL service provisioning and mainte-
nance. It is the antidote to broadband
network provisioning inefficiencies.
Highlights
– Caters for ADSL over ISDN, ADSL
over POTS and G.SHDSL with dual
exchangeable modems
– Tests all elements of DSL service
in one visit
– Reduces equipment and staff costs
– Increases return on DSL investments
– Provides comprehensive testing
and improved speed-to-revenue
Provides powerful combination ofphysical line and modem testingBy using the DSL-370’s icon driven
menu, test criteria can be selected
quickly and simply (see figure 1).
The DSL-370 provides complete
automated wideband copper quali-
fication for xDSL, ISDN and POTS up to
2 MHz and shows at a glance whether
new service offerings are technically
possible. This enables installers and
maintenance technicians to verify trans-
mission and physical characteristics.
It can also determine the characteristics
of copper connections quickly and sim-
ply. The DSL-370 has all the power of
Acterna’s DSL-311 and DSL-322
for physical copper testing plus the
addition of a digital volt/Ohm meter,
capacitance for distance to opens
and balance.
Ensures all flavors of xDSL catered forwith dual exchangeable modemsThis instrument’s dual user-exchange-
able modems make it the perfect tool
for customers using more than one
flavor of xDSL. The instrument also
displays major service parameters.
An LED indicates successful synchro-
nization between the DSL-370 and
the DSLAM.
The instrument verifies the ability
of the physical layer to support the
desired service. However, successful
turn-up is not just about connecting
to the DSLAM. The optional modem
modules also empower technicians
to validate the potential quality and
reliability of connections to the
Internet and other service providers.
The modem options currently available
are: ADSL over POTS, ADSL over ISDN
and G.SHDSL.

Tests all elements of DSL service in one visitThe key to the DSL-370’s success is
its ability to test all elements of a DSL
service during a single visit. The instru-
ment’s reputation as a one-man,
one-box solution is further enhanced
by its interoperability with Acterna’s
DSL-311 and DSL-322 copper test tools.
When used with either of these com-
plementary instruments, the DSL-370
provides a powerful end-to-end line
test solution. The use of automatic
test sequences (figure 2) allow the
user to set up templates for a simple
pass/fail response.
Reduces equipment and staff costsThe DSL-370’s straightforward graphical
user interface simplifies the testing
process, thus reduces the amount of
training needed for comprehensive
DSL testing. In addition, in-built auto-
mated features combined with support
for all phases of DSL service deploy-
ment, reduce the number of installers
required to provision and maintain
service as well as making it possible
for non-experts to operate tests.
Once the tests have been performed,
the DSL-370 delivers the results in
tabular or graphical formats (as shown
in figure 3) that can be interpreted on
the spot and saved for transfer to a PC
for reportingpurposes.TheDSL-370
includes all necessary accessories for
use in the field. It is supplied as a single
instrument in a soft carrying case.
Copper testingSingle-ended measurements
The DSL-370 provides everything
needed to test copper wire pairs.
Just one instrument is sufficient for
most measurements.
End-to-end measurements
To qualify lines for ISDN, HDSL, SDSL,
ADSL services, etc. Additional end-to-
end measurements are needed.
The device at the far end can be a
DSL-370, DSL-322 or DSL-311.
Testing analog connection lines
The DSL-370 provides additional
extended functions for qualifying
and troubleshooting copper wire pairs.
This allows the technician to ensure
that the service quality demanded
by the customer is provided.

(1) Any combination of DC plus peak AC must not exceed 350 Volts Peak.(2)Plus residual length due to instrument and test lead capacitance. The measurement is also influenced by the conversion factor of pF/m specified for a given cable type.
*The user should be aware that external voltages could effect the stated accuracy. The DSL-370 uses a special algorithm that implements synchronous detection to minimize to effect ofexternal voltages on the accuracy of the resistance measurement.
