ABOUT THE KING AND IDIRECTORS NOTE
It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, AnnaLeonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palacein Bangkok, having been summoned by the King toserve as a tutor to his many children and wives. TheKing is largely considered to be a barbarian by those inthe West and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changinghis image, if not his ways. With both keeping firm gripon their respective traditions and values, Anna and theKing grow to understand and, eventually, respect oneanother, in a truly unique love story.a
This is Rodgers and Hammerstein at their very best, based on a true story, it was also the first project broughtto them by a star who wanted to play the leading role. The star was Gertrude Lawrence. The King and I wenton to Broadway costing 360,000 dollars making it themost expensive Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, andone of the most lavish in Broadway history.
Yul Brynner’s relationship in The King and I is unique.Over the course of 34 years he played The King morethan 4,600 times, on stage, and on the big screen, andthen on television. The brought The King and I back toBroadway for a triumphant engagement then to thePalladium Theatre in London.
I would like to thank the entire coast and crew for theirhard work and affection shown during this production. It has been a totally happy show to direct.
