ABC’s of Genetics

Ex. If one of PBR’s toughest bulls had the

dominant allele for brown hair and mated with

a cow that had the recessive gene for crème

hair they could have the following allele

possibilities:

2 brown alleles, BB (1 from mom,1 dad)

* Genotype is homo dominant

* Phenotype is brown hair

2 crème alleles, bb (both from mom)

* Genotype is homo recessive

* Phenotype is crème hair

1 brown and 1 crème, Bb (1 mom,1 dad)

* Genotype is hetero

* Phenotype is brown hair

Chromosome: genetic information that you receive from either your mom or dad that makes up your DNA

Chromosomes tell what you’re going to look like, whether you will be a boy or a girl, and what kinds of disease you may get.

Chromosomes

are put into

karyotypes by

doctors to learn

about an

unborn baby

or an adult.

Dominant - The stronger of two genes expressed in the hybrid;

represented by a capital letter (R)

F When both parents donate their genes to their child, resulting in offspring with a mix of inherited genes.

Genes Sequences of DNA that codes for a

protein and thus determines a trait. A factor that is passed from parent to

offspring.

genes control your eye color, blood group, height and even your IQ

Garrett Johnson

Definition: An

organism that is the offspring of two parents that differ in one or more inheritable characteristics, especially the offspring of two different varieties of the same species or the offspring of two parents belonging to different species.

H YBRID

EX: Blade the vampire slayer is a hybrid

between a vampire and a human. This happened because his mother was a human and she was bitten by a vampire so he had DNA of both human and vampire.

Incomplete Dominance • The letter that I was given is letter I.

• (Incomplete Dominance) – The gene for a condition is present, but not obviously expressed in all individuals in a family with the gene.

• Example :

• Graphic that illustrates the term.

determines which factor

for a particular trait is

inherited.

Law of segregation:

States that during the

formation of gametes,

pairs of genes for a

specific trait separate

so that offspring

receive one factor

from each parent.

Law of Independent Assortment:

Law of dominance:

States that one of the factors for a

pair of inherited traits will be dominant

and the other recessive, unless both

factors are recessive.

His research with garden peas led to the discovers of the basic principles of heredits.

He did a statistical study of traits in garden peas over an 8 year period.

After completing his work with peas, Mendel turned to experimenting with honeybees to extend his work to animals. Beaver Wheat.

Notation

When alleles are written as

subscripts

the capital T notates the dominant allele

Quintuplets are a result from a single fertilized

egg or zygote splitting in to five embryos. Each

carrying the same genes. Commonly called identical

or quints.

Ex: Other times when an egg splits it can split in to twins(2), triplets(3),

quadruplets(4) etc. Forming identical siblings as like above. Bonnie Dodd

The most common types of

autosomal trisomy that survive to

birth in humans are:

Trisomy 21 - (Down syndrome)

Trisomy 18 -(Edwards syndrome)

Trisomy 13 -(Patau syndrome)

Trisomy 9

Trisomy 8 -(Warkany syndrome 2)

Shanequa Bullock

We use it routinely to cure diseases, solve crimes, and reunite families. Yet we've known about it for only 60 years. And what we're continuing to learn about it every day has the potential to transform our health, our nutrition, our society, and our future.

Understanding Genetics: Genetics is the scientific study of heredity and it is the key to understanding what makes each organism unique.

V Visible

The phenotype

of a genotype is

the visible trait.

People who work with genetics: Doctors Geneticist

How do they work with genetics: • A geneticist is a biologist who

studies genetics, the science of genes, heredity, and variation of organisms. A geneticist can be employed as a researcher or lecturer. Some geneticists perform experiments and analyze data to interpret the inheritance of skills. A geneticist is also a Consultant or Medical Doctor who has been trained in genetics as a specialization.

CHROMOSOME

Carlie Yernest

The sex chromosomes carried by men; Human males normally have one x chromosome, and one Y chromosome.

• A zygote is the cell that is formed when the sperm cell fertilizes the egg cell.

• The zygote divides multiple times, producing identical copies of itself.

• The cells produced by the dividing of the zygote form the developing embryo, fetus, and baby.
