A170-M and A175-M Axial turbochargers for the largest medium-speed engines in the world

Axial turbochargers with highcompressor ratios and efficiencyfor large medium-speed engineplatforms on marine and powerplant applications.

The new single-stage A170-M and A175-M turbochargers targetthe highest-powered medium-speed engines available, rangingfrom power outputs of 6,000 kW to 11,500 kW per turbocharger.

Performance concept

A100-M turbochargers for medium-speed engines are designedspecifically to meet market demand for the highest compressorpressure ratios with single-stage turbocharging. The A170-Mand A175-M are capable of producing market leading pressureratios of up to 5.8, which enables significantly increased enginepower densities.

The A170-M and A175-M ensure high turbocharger perform-ance, effecting a reduction in fuel consumption, thermal loading, and nitrogen oxide emissions.

Design concept

A100 axial turbochargers are of modular concept with a minimized number of components. A range of specific designand construction features, such as advanced cleaning systems, allow unrestricted heavy fuel oil (HFO), multi fuel, and gas operation for power plant and marine applications. This supports operators across both markets in maximizinguptime and availability.

Aluminum compressor wheels are standard

The compressor wheel cooling technology developed by ABBallows the continued use of aluminum for compressor wheelseven at such very high pressure ratios and without compro-mising the high operational reliability and long componentexchange interval that users have come to expect with thismaterial.

Qualification program

Like all newly developed ABB turbochargers, the A100 wentthrough a mandatory qualification program on ABB’s owncombustion rigs to ensure reliable operation in future engineapplications. The comprehensive series of tests ranged fromthermodynamic checking of the new compressor and turbinestages to mechanical qualification of all newly designed com-ponents.

Reducing total cost of ownership

The A100 turbocharger supports total cost of ownership dueto reduced number of components, unrestricted HFO opera-tion, and optimized fuel consumption. Use of the well-provencartridge concept also allows for ease of maintenance, repairand overhaul. This is supported by the ABB Turbo chargingnetwork of over 100 Service Stations in more than 50 countries.
