PAST – the beginnings
In 1802 Count Ferenc Széchényi, one of the country’s most eminent aristocrats offered his collection of books, medals and antiquities to his ’Dear Motherland’ and to the
’Common Good’.
PAST – the beginnings
The construction work of the museum building − one of the
most beautiful classicist palaces of Hungary − began in 1837.
PRESENT – the mission
Today the task of the Hungarian National Museum is to collect,
preserve and present the historical relics of the Carpathian
Basin and Hungary from prehistoric times to the present.
PRESENT – the collection
The museum’s permanent collection contains more than
one million works, world famous archaeological objects
and priceless treasures of history and culture.
PRESENT – the potential
part of the collection already digitized
participation in Creative Europe and FP7 projects (CEMEC, EUROPEANA INSIDE, etc.)
membership in ICOM (International Council of Museums) and AVICOM (International Committee for Audiovisual and New Technologies of
Image and Sound)
