The Arts help students learn and grow.

How do we know that the Arts matter?

• Schoolchildren exposed to drama, music, and dance are often more proficient at reading, writing, and math.

• There is a link between arts education and literacy skills.

• Art education does more than just give students a creative outlet. It can actually help connect them to the larger world, ultimately improving community cohesion.

• Teachers and students alike benefit from schools that have strong art climates.

• Arts education can improve graduation rates. • Integrating arts with other subjects can help raise

achievement levels. • Greater arts education led to fewer discipline problems and

higher attendance, graduation rates and test scores. • Arts education can help rewire the brain in positive ways.

Higher Education • The College Board identifies the arts as one of the six

basic academic areas students should study in order to succeed in college.

• 66% of music majors who applied to go to medical school were admitted, the highest percentage of any group. Only 44% of biochemistry majors were admitted.

• Most undergraduates who attend MIT take classes in the arts.

Legislative Updates HB 3218 – 2016 legislative session • Arts Assessment requirement for grades 3-8 in music and visual

art was eliminated • Effective July 1, 2016 SB 1380 – signed into law June 6, 2016 • Graduation requirement: 1 unit in the arts (including but not
