A Message from the Directors
Happy Spring to Everyone!
Spring has begun and we are looking forward to the nicer weather, longer days and
seeing the trees and flowers starting to bloom.
With a new season, we also see new beginnings for New Age Services Inc. On March
15, 2019 we had a wonderful Diversity Day. We celebrated Russia this year. We
thoroughly enjoyed the traditional foods from Russia and other countries, the
entertainment was a lovely choir of ladies who sang to us in Russian, shared traditions
with their clothing and stories to capture the Russian culture. We were also entertained by Tanya, Hailey and Kirsten who
performed a dance number for us.
At the end of February and into March 2019, the Executive Team was provided the opportunity to participate in Critical
Skills for Senior Leaders through Anthony and Holmes Consulting Ltd. This was integral for our team to enhance
communication through crucial conversations and critical thinking skills. We look forward to utilizing the skills we acquired
and to continue to be the best that we can be as a strong and cohesive team.
It has been announced that Election Day is Tuesday April 16, 2019. Advance Polls are April 09-13, 2019. We feel it is very
important for all of us to take the opportunity to get to know the candidates and parties, to review the current issues and to
vote who we feel should govern our province. Thus far, the current NDP government has not announced any cuts to our
sector.
Here is a link for your perusal, www.elections.ab.ca.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our dedicated teams and stakeholders. You continue to make a
difference and support the individuals to receive high quality services, be included and to live full and valued lives.
Spring is when you feel like whistling, even with a shoe full of slush.”

A Message from the Directors
Under Alberta’s new health and safety legislation (Bill 30, OHS Act, Regulation and Code), which came into effect on June 1, 2018, all employers are required to protect the health and safety of all parties at their work sites. All workers, regardless of number, also have health and safety rights and obligations. To protect workers from illnesses, injuries and diseases, workers are afforded three fundamental rights. Those rights are:
the right to know (about hazards),
the right to refuse (unsafe work), and
the right to participate (in health and safety).
What is the right to participate?
The right to participate ensures workers have an opportunity to participate in decisions that affect their health and safety at work. For most of Alberta’s workers, this participation is supported by a joint work site health and safety committee (HSC) or health and safety (HS representative). At New Age Services each Group Living home has a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) who is also a members of the JWHS Committee.
Your Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committee members are:
This list can be found posted at all New Age Services worksites’ Bulletin Boards.
Hazard assessments
Hazard assessments provide an excellent opportunity for workers to participate in health and safety activities. Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code (OHS Code) requires employers to conduct hazard assessments, and to either eliminate the hazards identified or put controls in place to protect against them. Hazard assessments and controls help build safe and healthy workplaces. They are at the core of every organization’s occupational health and safety management system. The hazard assessment and control process provides a consistent approach for employers and workers to identify and control hazards in the workplace.
New Age Services JWSHSC is now training all NAS staff on our Hazard Assessment and Risk Management process. Workers are the individuals doing the work and are in the best position to provide insight. As part of the process, affected workers will be given the results of the assessment once it is completed.
More information can be found on the government of Alberta website under Occupational Health and Safety: https://www.alberta.ca/occupational-health-safety.aspx.

Those ideas, we hope, have all been including in the document for our future references.
