A GIRL’S GUIDE TO
WELCOME HOMEWELCOME HOME
Wallpaper
he expression “everything old is new again” certainly applies to wallpaper. For years, many of us associated wallpaper with the old prints in our grandparents’
house, but it has made a huge comeback—and now we have almost unlimited options: bold geometric prints, whimsical florals and amazing murals in every imaginable color. These modern-day papers are easier than ever to apply, and you can find tons of great patterns in temporary peel-and-stick form, too. There’s never been a better time to give it a try. And if you do, Ree says to really go for it! “If you’re going to wallpaper a room, you need to make it count—small calico patterns or subtle stripes won’t do,” she says. “Embrace the drama and movement!” Read on for some of Ree’s wallpaper faves, plus tips on how to paper your own home.
Say goodbye to plain white walls and get ready to transform your rooms.

WELCOME HOME
You don’t have to paper a whole room to feel wallpaper’s effects. Try one of these spots.
Pattern Play
Statement wall Designer Kelly Bartley from AvantStay created
an eye-catching—and highly Instagrammable—space in this La Quinta, CA, short-term rental by layering
floral paper under a gallery wall.
Stairs The stairs in this Westbury, NY, home are a walk
on the wild side: Designer Camila Pavone of Effortless Style Interiors added a zebra print to risers.
Alcove Don’t overlook a nook! Designer Diane Rath
(therathproject.com) used a graphic teal wallpaper in this seating area of a Fairfield, CT,
house, matching it to the paper she used in her foyer.
Ceiling It’s a daring move, but wallpapering a ceiling can
help unify a space—like it did in this Cincinnati kitchen where design firm Neal’s Design Remodel added
a section up high to match the island.
Utility closet You might not think to
wallpaper your laundry area, but a bold pattern can
help make folding shirts a little more fun. The doors
and work table in this space are painted in
complementary colors.
Coat closet Designer Kyla Herbes (houseofhipsters.com)
papered the hall closet in her Chicago home with this print. When guests
hang up their coats, they get a fun surprise.

Consider a proIf you’ve decided to give
traditional wallpaper a go and the space you’re wallpapering
has lots of cutouts or odd angles, you’ll want to
hire a professional. Papering those nooks and crannies is tougher than it looks!
Prep the wallsBefore you start papering
(or before you hire a pro), fill in any cracks and holes and
sand down your walls to create an even surface. Then wipe the walls with a damp sponge and
let them dry completely before applying the paper.
Buy extra—and check the dye lot
Order about 10 percent more than you think you’ll need. If the paper has a pattern, you’ll want to match
the seams perfectly, which may result in excess at the top or bottom you’ll have to trim. Also, check your rolls’ dye lot number. They should all have the same one; otherwise,
the color between rolls could be off.
Don’t be afraid of damp rooms You can wallpaper humid spaces like kitchens and bathrooms as long as you
choose vinyl or vinyl-coated wallpaper, which has a
waterproof layer that helps it stand up to moisture.
Will you go with traditional permanent
wallpaper or temporary peel-and-stick?
See which of these statements apply to you to help you
make your decision.
I rent my place. I might move in the near future. I love a DIY project. I often change my mind about decor. I’m covering only a small area. I can’t deal with wallpaper paste.
I own my place. I’m willing to hire a pro. I love a thick textured wallpaper. My taste doesn’t change very often. I’m picky about patterns. I have bumpy or textured walls.
Traditional Wallpaper Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
What’s Your Type?
Get the right tools If you’re taking a crack at
traditional wallpaper, you’ll need a smoothing brush, utility knife, level, ruler and wallpaper paste
(unless your paper comes prepasted; many do). Generally,
all-purpose paste works for medium to lightweight papers,
and heavy-duty paste is for heavy textured or embossed ones.
Before you start wallpapering, keep these tips in mind.
Good on Paper
Know your rollsWallpaper is usually priced by
the single roll, but it’s packaged as two rolls, or a “double roll.” Confused? You’re not alone.
Wallpaper is sold this way because you’re buying a continuous roll that’s simply been cut in half
for convenience. To further confuse matters, some companies sell
a double roll as one continuous roll!
