A CHECK LIST OF
NEW ENGLAND ELECTION SERMONS
BY R. W. G. VAIL
FROM colonial times it was the custom of certain ofthe New England states to open each year's session
of the legislature with an annual election sermon.Since there is much history as well as fiery patriotismand dry theology in these old sermons, they have beensought by librarians and collectors. Many of them areexcessively rare as well as extremely interesting. Sincethere is no adequate list of them, this checklist hasbeen attempted. Complete collations are not givensince they may, for the most part, be found in suchworks as Evans, Sabin and Gilman.
The largest collection for all of the states is at theAmerican Antiquarian Society though in the cases ofConnecticut and New Hampshire, somewhat morecomplete collections are to be found in the historicallibraries of those states. The following list attempts torecord copies in a few of the larger collections, togetherwith the earlier titles located by Evans.
