Working with Teams

5 Dysfunctions of a TeamBy Patrick Lencioni

Patrick Lencioni states …

• “In … working with” CEOs and their teams, two critical truths have become clear to me.

• First, genuine teamwork … remains as elusive as it’s ever been.

• Second, organizations fail to achieve teamwork because they unknowingly fall prey to five natural but dangerous pitfalls, which I will call the five dysfunctions of a team:

Absence of trusttrust

• Stems from unwillingness to be vulnerable within the group

• Lack of genuine openness with one another about mistakes & weaknesses makes it impossible to build a foundation for trust.

Fear of conflictconflict

• Teams that lack trust are incapable of engaging in unfiltered and passionate debate of ideas.

• Instead, they resort to veiled discussions and guarded comments.

Lack of commitmentcommitment

• Without having aired their opinions in the course of passionate and open debate, team members rarely, if ever, “buy in” and commit to decisions, though they may feign agreementfeign agreement during meetings.

Avoidance of accountabilityaccountability

• Without committing to a clear plan of action, even the most focused and driven people often hesitate to callcall their peers on actions and behaviors that seem counterproductivecounterproductive to the good of the team.

Inattention to resultsresults

• Occurs when team members put their individual needs (such as ego, career development, or recognition) or even the needs of their ‘division’ above the collective goalscollective goals of the team.

A truly cohesive team …

• TRUSTS one another

• ENGAGES in unfiltered conflict around ideas

• COMMITS to decisions and plans

• Holds each other ACCOUNTABLE

• FOCUSES on achievement of collective results
