Breaking Open The Word
February 11, 2018
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 The Lord tells Moses and Aaron that anyone bearing the sore of leprosy must first be seen by Aaron or one of the other priests, and that as long as the sore is upon him, “He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” Second Reading: 1-Corinthians 10:31-11:1 Paul instructs the Corinthians to do everything for the glory of God, to avoid offending others, and to be imitators of Christ. Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus takes pity on a leper and cures him of his disease with a warning not to say anything but to show himself to the priest and make an offering. Instead of remaining silent, the leper greatly publicized the healing, making it impossible for Jesus to enter the town openly. Consider/Reflect: This week, we begin the season of Lent, a time of renewal and repentance. We have a tendency to approach this time from a traditional posture. Ashes, meatless Fridays and Station of the Cross are all part of our practice and tradition. Wait a minute. Picture the lonely leper, ill and isolated, but with firm faith and determination, violating the rules imposed through Moses, approaching Jesus, seeking much needed help. We are he! Consider a moment what it took for him to act. He was desperate, knowing the reality of his condition. He spoke ‘if you wish…’ He heard the will of Jesus, felt His compassion, was touched by the healer. We are he! Let us seriously consider how to begin Lent this year and live renewal and repentance with the leper to be healed, cleansed and enlivened. Let us bring our whole selves to God as we are. Let Jesus touch us throughout the Lenten season. Let us deepen our connection with God and let Jesus’ healing touch help us give glory to God. Perhaps we can give an hour of our time to sit in the presence of the Lord on Fridays during the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament this Lenten Season.

FAMILY of the MONTH
MEET THE ZABINSKI FAMILY Amy and Conrad have been members of St. Theresa’s Parish for about eighteen years. They both serve as Eucharistic Ministers at the 11:30 mass. Conrad is a member of our local council of the Knights of Columbus. They also happen to be members of our Respect Life Ministry here at the parish and Amy happens to be the chairperson. What makes us particularly proud is that they also represent St Theresa’s at the Diocesan level with things concerning the Respect Life Ministry. If you happen to see them around the parish, be sure to thank them for being the caring, giving couple they truly are!
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
The Annual Catholic Appeal is integral to the mission and services of the Diocese of Trenton. Providing day to day assistance to those among us with the greatest needs: training for seminarians, for youth in our Catholic schools and religious education programs. The Annual Appeal ensures the funding necessary so that these programs may continue to serve thousands throughout our Diocese. As in the past, this year’s efforts will create new opportunities and hopefully expand services for those living and working within the counties of Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean. The first Appeal mailing will be mailed to all registered Catholics in the Diocese the week of February 13th, which includes a brochure, pledge card, and return envelope. Please try to make your gifts early. This year’s Annual Appeal Weekend in Church – or “kick-off” – is scheduled for the weekend of February 24 & 25, 2018. If you did not return the pledge card you received in the mail, you will be asked to make a pledge this weekend in Church. A short video will be shown the weekend before the kick off - February 17 & 18. This year The Parish of St. Theresa’s share of the goal is $43,258.00 Please note: When a parish collects funds equal to their ACA goal, they will receive a 15% rebate. Funds collected in excess of the parish goal will earn a 50% rebate. A parish that increases their participation rate by at least ten percent will receive an additional 5% rebate. Thank you once again for your support! Your efforts last year helped us.

O F F I C E O F THE B I S HO P Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
During the days and weeks of penance that lie ahead --- from Ash Wednesday, February 14th until Holy Thursday, March 29th --- the Catholic Church throughout the world commemorates the penitential season of Lent. The model Jesus gave us for “these forty days” was his own experience in the desert and the temptations that followed Him there where He encountered Satan face to face. And yet, Jesus, there in the desert --- alone, fasting and in intense prayer --- beat back the devil and triumphed over temptation, as strong and as unrelenting as it was throughout those forty days.
We enter the desert of Lent like Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, to face our devils, our temptations head on. But we are not alone. The Lord Jesus Christ is with us. And so, too, is the Church, the entire community of faith observing Lent. Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States requires of us as baptized Catholics:
The days of FAST (only one full meal) and ABSTINENCE (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No dispensations are granted on these solemn days except for reason of sickness or those provided in canon law below.
Valentine’s Day falls on Ash Wednesday, February 14th this year. Since Ash Wednesday is one of only two solemn penitential days, no dispensations will be granted. St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, falls on a Saturday this year. All other Fridays of Lent are days of ABSTINENCE (no meat).
Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to FAST (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to ABSTAIN (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat).
The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of penitential days, that must be considered serious.
The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 17-18th to Trinity Sunday, May 26-27th. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.
I want to encourage Catholics to go to confession and to make use of the sacrifices and traditions that have always been part of our Lenten practices in the Church.
We do, indeed, fast and pray with the Lord Jesus and with our fellow Catholics. May this Lent be a time of penance leading to grace and joy for us all at Easter.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Ash Wednesday is February 14,
2018 and marks the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent. Each Friday during
the entire Season of Lent, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the Daily Chapel for private Adoration. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed following the Friday 8:00 AM Mass and will be reposed at 5:30 PM following Benediction. Weekly observance of the Stations of the Cross will follow in the Church each Friday beginning at 6:00 PM
Friday Adoration can only occur if we can guarantee that there will always be a minimum of 3 people present in the Chapel the entire time the Blessed Sacrament is exposed.
On the weekends of February 2 & 3 and February 10 & 11 there will be lists in the Gathering Space following all the Masses for you to sign up to be present during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays during Lent. Please consider giving an hour of your time to sit in the presence of the Lord on Fridays during the Holy Season of Lent.
PLEASE NOTE: We have moved the Stations of the Cross from 7:00 PM to 6:00 PM this year. We are hoping this earlier time will allow and encourage more people to attend this traditional and spiritual Lenten devotion.
