Queensland Artist wins the
2014 Calleen Art Award. The winners of the 2014 Calleen Art Award
and Central West Regional Art Award were
announced by the Awards Judge Michael
Rolfe CEO Museums and Galleries of NSW at
a gala opening event on Saturday 3 May 2014.
T he Calleen Art Award and Central
West Regional Art Award foster
and encourage originality, creativity and
excellence in the visual arts.
The Calleen Art Award was
established as an acquisitive art prize in
1977 and has developed into a significant national painting art award (in any subject). This year the Calleen
Art Award is worth $18,000.
The Central West Regional Art Award was established in 2009 with the aim to benefit and provide
professional development opportunities for artists from the Central West region. The award is non-
acquisitive in the categories of painting and drawing (in any subject) with a prize of $2,000.
There is also a People’s Choice Award of $500.
The winner of the 2014 Calleen Art Award
was Naomi White from Bardon (a suburb of Brisbane)
Queensland for her work End of Day (2014)
oil on canvas 112 x 183cm.
Judges comments “In her work End of Day Naomi White uses sharp and intuitive brush strokes and discreet
tonal gestures, abstracted in parts, to achieve a sharp and focused work. It's not landscape
from around here (Cowra), but it is an appropriate work for a collection that aspires to
represent in some sense the vistas only artists see and to bring them before our eyes.” Michael Rolfe. Highly Commended Awards (Calleen Art Award) went to Alison Chiam from Vincentia NSW for her work Snowy Plains, Monaro NSW (2014) oil on canvas 72 X120cm; Stephen Pleban from Ballart Victoria
for his work Intertwine 2 (2014) oil and wax on canvas 152 x 162cm; Georgina Pollard from Kandos NSW for her work mis-tint II (2014) acrylic house paint on fabric 128 x 255cm; and Matthew Quick from Collingwood Vic for his work Coronation (2014) oil on linen 120 x 100cm.
The winner of the 2014 Central West Regional Art Award was Genevieve
Carroll from Hill End NSW for her work Over the Table Blue Dandelions (2014) oil on board 150 x 180cm. Judges Comments
“I gave the Central West Regional Art Award to a work that displays for me a real enthusiasm for painting. With a practice described as a
circumnavigation of her life, Genevieve Carroll has produced a lively work - Over the Table Blue Dandelions - energetically transcribed and
mediated through the experience of all things important to her. For me it wasn't circumnavigating anything. Rather the artist appears to jump right
in - It is a well conducted narrative and an artwork not bogged in paint but rather imbued with light and life.” Michael Rolfe.
Below are the four works which were Highly Commended by Awards Judge Michael Rolfe.

T his exhibition opened on 22 March, 2014, and was
highly successful. Over 70 enthusiastic patrons
attended the Saturday afternoon event which featured a
special floor talk by Photojournalist Ian Lloyd about the
development and works in Studio, and also guest speaker
Gavin Wilson who opened Genevieve Carroll’s exhibition
of new works The Wattle Room.
The exhibition provided a unique insight into the minds, moods and creative processes of some of the nation’s
most acclaimed painters. R. Ian Lloyd began is a successful documentary photographer who has undertaken commissions
for magazines such as National Geographic, Fortune and Time, and has won
numerous awards for his work. His photographs have been widely
exhibited around the world.
R. Ian Lloyd Floor Talk Ian Lloyd gave his listeners a fascinating glimpse of the problems
he faced as a photographer- journalist/publisher once he decided to
publish a collection of photographs. It took him 5 years to complete the
project. He asked each artist the same 18 questions, and took 2 or 3
views ensuring the artist was happy with the result, usually spending 20
minutes to one hour but sometimes up to three hours on each video
interview. Ian planned for a double page spread for each artist. He
appreciated artists who allowed him to see works half finished - Wendy
Sharp being one such, who also remarked that she had so many ideas that
she didn’t know how to fit them all in. Above: Ian explaining his work.

The Wattle Room: Force of Circumstance –
Chapter 7
A lso opened on Saturday 22 March was a selection of new
works by Hill End artist Genevieve Carroll, winner of the
2012 Central West Regional Art Award.
The exhibition was opened by Gavin Wilson, at right,
Independent Curator and Author, who spoke on Genevieve and
her work.
Genevieve is the 4th artist to have won the award and
consequently present an
exhibition in the gallery. She has
also won the Central West
Regional Art Award for 2014.
“My artworks are an
ongoing visual memoir called
The Wattle Room and each
exhibition is a chapter of my life,
with all their crudities and
doubts my art circumnavigates
still life, poetry, my garden and
the world that I live in.”
Genevieve Carroll exhibition quote.

Jason Benjamin: Everyone is Here The paintings and drawings on display are a distillation of deep-felt encounters around distinct landscape
sites, where the artist has concentrated his energies on shaping a pared-back vision of light and space. The
works bear witness to Benjamin’s disciplined scrutiny of topography, vegetation and climate as well as environmental concerns. Yet, what sets these works apart is the poetic metamorphosis that can only take place
in the solitude of the studio. A touring exhibition curated by Gavin Wilson. Jason Benjamin Before They Wake Up 2010 oil on linen 120 x 120.
