The Revolutionary War was won…Independence from Britain was gained.
Now, years later—the struggle was internal.
Washington Leaves
• There was never any question that George Washington would be the President after the
Revolution.
No one told Washington he could only serve 2 terms as president.
Near the end of his second term, Washington had grown tired of the newly developing party politics.
• He had suffered attacks on his character .
In his farewell address, Washington warned Americans about the dangers of political
parties.He compared political parties to a fire that could burn out of control!
HE TOLD AMERICANS TO AVOID SECTIONALISM~DIVIDING THE COUNTRY INTO NORTH AND SOUTH OR EAST AND WEST!
George Washington also warned about another problem he saw developing.
AND THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
George Washington created the Department of State, Department of War and Department of
Treasury
General Henry Knox as Secretary of War
Washington’s choice for Attorney General was Edmond Randolph
OVER TIME, THE DEPARTMENT HEADS CAME TO BE CALLED THE CABINET!
AFTER THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR:George Washington- President
Alexander Hamilton created a national bank & created a whiskey tax (25%)
Most people just hid their whiskey stills or destroyed them rather than pay
Washington sent 13,000 troops to crush the Whiskey Rebellion
This is where the first political parties were born!
POLITICAL PARTIES
Led by Alexander HamiltonHe believed :democracy was dangerousGovernment should be run by the “rich,
well born and able”.The economy needed manufacturing
and trade
Democratic-Republican Party: Over time this party will stand for “States Rights”
against the federal government
Led by Thomas JeffersonHe believed:The strength of the country depended on
independent farmers who owned landSupported agriculture over manufacturing and
tradeA country based on trade would lead to a society
divided between rich people who owned everything & poor people who worked for wages.
Problems with France
Adams sent 3 representatives to France, but they were kept waiting for weeks to speak to the French.
Finally, 3 French men came identifying themselves as X, Y and Z.
The Answer Was NO!
This is known as the XYZ AFFAIR!
X, Y and Z wanted a bribe of $250,000 and a loan for another $12 million.
Undeclared War between France and America
Quasi-War France agreed with Adams that it should stop.

Democratic-Republican (now shortened to Republican)
Jefferson believed: Washington and Adams had acted like royalty No carriage---horseback No grand table---small dining table No whiskey tax Make government smaller
Unfinished BusinessPresident John Adams’ last night in office,
he stayed up until midnight appointing 16 judges to the supreme court (Federalist)
They are known as the Midnight Judges.
Jefferson tried to have one of the judges removed.
The French still owned Louisiana.
Jefferson sent his ambassador, Robert Livingston
Napoleon Bonaparte sold Louisiana to. America for 11.25 million dollars.
This comes to about .11 cents an acre.
The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the country.
Because farmers moved west to create new states, New England began to fear being outnumbered by the southern states.
The Essex Junto
Drafted a plan to leave the union- secede.
They don’t do it, but just the fact that they talked about it shows the division between north and south already beginning.
Burr heard this and challenged Hamilton to a duel
Aaron Burr—ran for governor of New York
Alexander Hamilton- declares Burr is “A dangerous man who ought not be trusted with the reigns of government”.
The French still owned Louisiana.
July 11, 1804 Burr shot and killed Hamilton in a duel

The battle in Baltimore lasted all through the night
In Baltimore:•The British attacked Ft. McHenry•13,000 militia & another 1,000 American soldiers fought back•Early the next morning, British backed away from the battle
•A young lawyer, Frances Scott Key
•held hostage on a ship.
•Saw flag still flying
He turned over to the back side of a letter to scribble a poem.
It became our National Anthem
The original Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the song that would become our national anthem, is among the most treasured artifacts in the collections of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
