Synthesis:Ratherthanfocusingononeaspectofaplace,geographerslookforconnectionsandrelationshipsbetweenculture,politics,economics,andthenaturalenvironment.Youwillseethisapproachinourtextbookandthroughmanyothercoursematerials,andyouareaskedtomakesimilarconnectionsinyourownworkinthisclass.Additionally,youwillbeaskedtoapproximatetheworkofprofessionalgeographersbysynthesizinginformationfromdifferenttypesofsources:personalmusingsaboutdailylifeinaforeigntown,in-depthscholarlyarticlesaboutspecificphenomena,textbookchaptersdescribingbroadregionalpatterns,andmore.Scale:Whilemanyofyoumaybefamiliarwiththeconceptof“scale”ashowzoomedinorzoomedoutamapis,themostimportanttypeofscaletokeepinmindforthisclassisthescaleofanalysis.Aproblemorphenomenoncanbeanalyzedatawidevarietyofscales—fromthehouseholdtotheentireworld—andyourscaleofanalysiscanshedlightonverydifferent

processesandrelationshipsandcanevenleadyoutodifferentconclusions.(Forexample:Nationaleconomiescanimprovewhilecertaincities,groupsofpeople,orsectorsareindecline;airqualitycandeclinegloballybutimproveincertaincountries.)Thiscourseisbroadlystructuredaroundworldregions,butthebordersbetweenourlistedregionsaresomewhatarbitrary.Throughoutthesemester,payattentiontodiversitywithinregions,globalprocessesthatoperateacrossregions,andsimilaritiesanddifferencesthatmightsuggestalternativewaysofdrawingworldregionalboundaries.

Four‘bigideas’runthroughallofthemodulesinthiscourseandareusedtohelpframetheassessmentmechanisms(discussionforums,synthesisassignments,moviereviews):

BigIdea1:IDENTITY:Individualandgroupidentitiesarecreatedthroughdynamicanddialecticprocesses;identityisnotstatic.Bothindividualsandgroupsperceivethemselvesasproductsofmultipleratherthansingularidentities,althoughcertainidentitiesmaycarrymoreweightatparticularmomentsinhistories.Identityisformedbyfactorsincludinggeography,culture,language,history,mobility,technology,andeconomy.Identityisrelationalinnatureinthatitisformedandunderstoodwhenrelatingtoothersviaallaspectsoflife.BigIdea2:DIVERSITY:Theworld’sregionsarediverseinboththeirphysicalandcultural/economicgeographies,andtheidentitiesofthepeoplewholiveineachregionareshapedbybothhistoricalandpresentgeographies,languages,cultures,andeconomies.Characteristicsofaplaceandpeopleundergoconstantchange,andcontaingreatdiversityatscalesassmallasthehouseholdandasencompassingasthe“worldregion.”BigIdea3:UNEVENDEVELOPMENT&MARGINALIZEDPEOPLES:Developmentofregionsandtheworldhashistoricallybeenuneven,withcertaingroupsorareasgaininggreaterhumanwell-beingoreconomicadvantagemorerapidlythanothergroupsorareas.Thisunevendevelopmentpartlymanifestsitselfinplacinggreaterburdensofenvironmentaldamageuponthosegroupsorareaswithlesspowerrelativetoothers.BigIdea4:GLOBALINTERDEPENDENCIES:Geographicareasoftheworlddependupononeanotherforresourcesincludingnatural,human,andtechnicalresources.Therelationshipsbetweencertaingeographicareashelptodeterminethedegreetowhichareasareabletomoveinnewdirectionsofeconomicorsocialdevelopment.Pathdependenciesarecreatedandtransformed,generatingopportunitiesandconstraintsforeachworldregionanditspeoples.Globalproductionnetworks(orglobalvaluechains)arekeyfactorsshapingthenatureofinter-regionalinterdependencies.GPNs/GVCsaredrivenbytransnationalcorporationsbutstronglyshapedbytheroleofthestateandstate-firmrelationsinthedevelopmentprocess.Theroleoflaborinthisdevelopmentprocessishighlycontestedandvariesoverspaceandtime.

AVirtualClass:Online&AsynchronousGeography340isa100%onlinecourse:wedonot,asanentireclass,meetphysicallyatanytimeduringtheterm.Indeed,evenifwewantedto,thiswouldbeimpossibleassomeofyouarelivinginotherpartsofWisconsin,theUS,ortheworld,orperhapstravelingthroughoutthetermwhileonastudy-abroadprogram.However,wedefinitelyencourageyoutomeetwithusduringour
