Derek PierceDerek is the founding principal of Casco Bay High School in the Portland Public School system. Casco Bay High School features Expeditionary Learning, which grew out of Outward Bound. In expeditionary schools students tackle multidisciplinary projects that take them into the local and national community. In 2012, CBHS was named one of Maine’s top high schools by US News and World Report and selected as a “Mentor School” in Expeditionary Learning’s national network. Prior to CBHS he was principal at Poland Regional High School. He has taught English, Theater, and American Studies in schools from Los Angeles to Gorham. He has lived in Portland with his family since 1993.

Adam BurkAdam is a cultural architect, designing spaces like TEDxDirigo that raise the ambient level of virtue and resilience. He has a diverse background dedicated to living well in our places and with each other. He initiated the first sustainability initiatives for social service agencies in Maine, developed a restorative justice program for homeless youth, guided the formation of the Farm to School programs for a dozen in Southern Maine, and leads wilderness trips as a registered Maine Guide.

A N N A H E P L E RAnna Hepler ’s work grapples with inversion such as

inflatable volumes that collapse into a plane, sculptures that are in constant motion, prints

cut apart and assembled as sculpture. Her work includes the construction of large

sculptural installations, small sculptural forms, and two-dimensional work. Hepler ’s work has been exhibited in numerous private galleries and

museums, including the 2010 solo Circa exhibition at the PMA,

Anna Hepler: Makeshift.

D O N P E R K I N S Don Perkins has served as Gulf

of Maine Research Institute’s president & CEO since 1995. Don

manages GMRI’s evolution as a strategic science, education and

community institution catalyzing solutions to the complex

challenges of ocean stewardship and economic growth in the

Gulf of Maine bioregion. Prior to joining GMRI, he instructed at the Hurricane Island Outward

Bound School, directed the Marine Conservation Corps

in California, and served as a financial advisor to Native

American tribes at Tribal Assets Management.

Cannon Rock Sessions is a biennial program inspired by Winslow Homer’s work, his Studio at Prouts Neck, and by Maine’s landscape and coastline. The 2013 Cannon Rock Sessions focuses on the theme “weather,” a topic that had direct influence on Winslow Homer, but also affects each of us every day. Cannon Rock Sessions brought together two “visiting minds,” to discuss the topic during a five-day residency at the Black Point Inn. To fuel the conversation PMA orchestrated three sessions in three days. Each session was led by a different convener and invited a diverse group of community members to the discussion. Cannon Rock Sessions is meant to ignite further conversation among the participants and to enrich thinking around the topic. This evening’s Summer Dialogue invites the public to contribute to this ongoing discussion of weather. 

Sara CorbettSara is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and other notable publications. In 2004 she co-founded The Telling Room in Portland, Maine with writers Mike Paterniti and Susan Conley. Sara is also the author of Venus to the Hoop: A Gold-Medal Year in Women’s Basketball. Her feature stories have covered topics like child trafficking in Cambodia, the resettlement of Sudanese orphans in the U.S., and the psychological struggle of soldiers wounded in Iraq. Her newest book, A House in the Sky, co-written with Amanda Lindhout, will release in fall 2013.
