BACKGROUND
• SustainIT – world’s first organisation purely focused on sustainable ICT (1999)- European Commission; DTI; BERR- Expert Group on ICT & Energy Efficiency
• Higher Education Environmental Performance Improvement (www.heepi.org.uk)
• SusteIT- Strategic review of IT in universities- Highlighting and supporting best practice
A LARGE ICT FOOTPRINT
• 2% of global CO2 emissions
• ICT in UK HE- 760,000 PCs- 215,000 servers- associated cooling & power- 147,000 networked printers- 512,000 Mwh of electricity- 275,000 tonnes of CO2 - over £60 million in 2009
BUILDING-IT CONNECTIONS
• Tomorrow’s buildings must support ICT-intensive learning
• BEMS are already reducing costs & energy- can a common IP platform for building services reduce them further?
• IT central to space planning/utilisation
• IT an increasing proportion of building-related energy
