Kate ReadingSaunton 2014

What have they taught me?

• Always know what you are letting yourself in for- CV, informal chat, what are they not telling you

• Make clear your role from the start- teacher, listening ear, critical friend (never forget this is a professional relationship)

• Don’t underestimate the impact of life events- finances, love affairs, morning sickness

• Do you trust them?• Documentation of training- just enough, high quality not

quantity- be clear about your expectations • Everyone has a personal consultation style and there is room

for infinite variety as long as the quality is there

What have I taught them?

• Observation and listening to the patient will usually give you the answer

• There is no way around gaining knowledge except learning something every week, for ever- BMJ highlights

• I can only be me- sit in with lots of doctors and watch how they do it• Stay within the rules and keep your head down- eportfolio, leave,

VTS attendance• Educational theory that works- Pendleton’s rules Johari window Damian Kenny’s consultation model

Why do things go wrong?

• Making incorrect assumptions about a registrar• Registrar not telling the whole story• Knowledge deficits• Lack of professional attitude• Personality clash- this should not happen if you have done the

preliminaries• Always document issues from the start, record facts first and

your interpretation second and sparingly

Where do trainers go for support?

• Always trainers’ workshop• Deanery has usually disappointed• Support for trainer and trainee must be consistent and

transparent- formal meetings, further training, mediation

Now can we talk about narrow boating?
