1998 Noncitrus Utilized Production and Value Both Down 13 Percent from 1997
In 1998, the Nation's utilized production of the leading noncitrus fruit crops totaled 16.0 million tons, down13 percent from 1997's record production. Utilized production decreased from last year for all crops exceptapples, bananas, tart cherries, dates, papayas, pineapples, other prunes and plums, and strawberries. Grapeutilized production accounted for almost three-fourths of the decline from 1997. Value of utilized production for noncitrus fruit crops totaled 7.10 billion dollars, down 13 percent from 1997. The value of apple, grape, and peach production declined by 22 percent, 20 percent, and less than 1 percent, respectively. Strawberries showed an increase of 14 percent.
Highlights
Utilized Apple production for 1998 was estimated at 10.6 billion pounds, 3 percent greater than 1997. Production in Eastern States was reduced as a result of dry conditions but was more than offset by largeproduction increases in Washington, Colorado, and Idaho.
Utilized grape production for 1998 totaled 5.59 million tons, down 23 percent from 1997's record crop but1 percent above the 1996 crop. California production was down 24 percent from last year, with raisin, table, and wine type production decreasing 32 percent, 27 percent, and 15 percent, respectively. Washingtonproduction decreased 30 percent from 1997, while production in Michigan increased 16 percent. New Yorkand Pennsylvania also declined from a year ago.
Utilized peach production in 1998 was estimated at 2.35 billion pounds, down 6 percent from last year but15 percent above 1996. The California crop, accounting for 74 percent of the U.S. peach crop, was down 6 percent from 1997.
Utilized pear production, at 924 thousand tons, was down 11 percent from last year’s crop. Washington,California, and Oregon the top three producing states, were down 20 percent, 8 percent, and 4 percent, respectively. New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan all posted larger crops, however, New York left13 percent of their total production unharvested due to poor fruit quality caused by bad weather during thegrowing season.
U.S. Nut Production and Value Drop Sharply
The 1998 U.S. nut production (in-shell basis) dropped 25 percent to 903 thousand tons. Pistachios, at188 million pounds, were the only tree nut to show a production increase over 1997, up 4 percent. Hazelnutproduction led the declines, plummeting 67 percent to 15.5 thousand tons. Pecans fell 54 percent to aproduction level of 155 million pounds. Almonds, at 520 million pounds, showed a decline of 31 percent. Walnuts were off 18 percent with 220 thousand tons produced. Alternate bearing cycles and adverse weatherwere the primary causes of the decreases.
The 1998 U.S. value of utilized production decreased 22 percent to 1.64 billion dollars. Hazelnut value, at15.2 million dollars, was down 64 percent despite an improved price per ton. Almonds accounted for 898million dollars, down 23 percent. Macadamias, at 35.5 million dollars, and pistachios, at 186 million dollars, were off 18 percent and 8 percent, respectively. In spite of drastically lower production, the pecan value wasonly off 26 percent due to sharply higher prices.
