Mission Statement:
Rockport-Fulton Seafair is a sea-themed fundraising event of the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of
Commerce where funds go toward helping make the community a better place.
Purpose: It is structured to attract families and provide non-profit organizations an opportunity
to raise funds for their local worthwhile projects. It strives to bring new visitors to the area and
impact the local economy.
History of Seafair
Seafair started as one man’s idea
Seafair was the brainchild of a Rockport man, Bill Christian. He believed the area needed a
celebration in the fall to fill the lull between the summer visitors and the arrival of winter tourists.
He formed a committee that worked diligently for years.
Though the event has grown since the first year, it remains very much the same as Christian
envisioned it. Art, a parade, crafts, bands, market vendors, water entertainment and a gumbo
cook-off were part of the very first Seafair. They remain today as major attractions.
Christian formed a Board of Directors, established a 501 c 4 non-profit organization. In April of
2000, Pam Farley, President of Seafair at the time came to a Rockport-Fulton Area Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors meeting and requested the Chamber of Commerce take it over.
After much discussion, the Chamber Board voted to take on the event. That year, during Seafair
the community experienced the coldest of cold fronts and four days of solid rain.
It was shortly after that rained out event, Bill Christian came into the office of the Chamber
expressing encouraging words to continue. He handed over a box full of Seafair history. Rest
assured, the Chamber is committed to the legacy of Seafair. Since then, Seafair has endured all
kinds of weather conditions including rain, heat and cold. About to enter into its 41st year, Seafair
continues to grow… bringing in bigger and better activities and entertainment with each passing
year!
