Studies in marine life, science, and ecology are available for all ages. The Beaufort museum is the repository for artifacts from Blackbeard’s wrecked flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, among them cannons, grenades, belt buckles and beads. The Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center teaches boatbuilding for all ages. The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is open Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission to the public. Donations appreciated. The North Carolina Maritime Museums are part of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. In addition to the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the other two maritime museums include The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. The three North Carolina Maritime Museums preserve and interpret North Carolina’s coastal life and history. They paint a picture of the maritime and coastal culture including fishermen, boat builders, decoy carvers and more. They present exhibits of painters and pirates, shipwrecks and sailboats, and about marine life and protection. We encourage you to “Like” us on Facebook to stay current with our events programs. 2017 Brown Bag Gams
The popular Brown Bag Gams are popular with visitors and locals alike. Bring a brown
bag lunch and learn about North Carolina’s rich coastal environment and culture at
these informal lectures. The presentations occur between Noon and 1 p.m.

Brown Bag Gam: From Lightships to Light Towers
January 5, Noon
Pack a lunch for the Brown Bag Gam during your lunch hour and join Associate Curator
Benjamin Wunderly for a talk about lightships and light towers. Shortly after the
construction of several coastal lighthouses in North Carolina it was apparent that some
locations would require additional warning lights. The dangerous shoals of Diamond,
Lookout and Frying Pan proved difficult to navigate for many seafaring captains. Learn
about the early attempts to mark these treacherous waters and what has happened to
the latest towers. Gam is defined as a friendly conversation between whalers or to visit
with another ship while at sea. Free Admission. No advance registration. Walk-ins
welcome. North Carolina Maritime Museum, 315 Front Street, Beaufort, NC 28516.

Brown Bag Gam: Women Pirates
March 24, Noon
Whether through association, partnership, or actually practicing piracy, women were
very involved in the world of pirates. This program will focus on the pirates Anne Bonny
and Mary Read, as well as look at the supporting roles that women played in the world
of piracy. Unfortunately, due to the fact that women pirates were forced to hide their
gender, we will never know how many female pirates were active during the Golden
Age of pirates, but thanks to women such as Anne Bonny and Mary Read we know they
were out there. Free Admission. No advance registration. Walk-ins welcome. North

April 26, Noon
Pack a lunch for the Brown Bag Gam during your lunch hour and join Associate
Museum Curator Benjamin Wunderly for an informal discussion about crossing the
water by ferry on North Carolina’s rivers and sounds. Most ferry operations in the state
started as private enterprises but eventually became part of the transportation system
that helps commerce and communities thrive. From early river ferries that were pulled
up stream and let go to the other side to the large Sound Class ferries that traverse the
Pamlico, we will give a glimpse into the history of this interesting mode of travel. Gam is
defined as a friendly conversation between whalers or to visit with another ship while at
sea. Free Admission. No advance registration. Walk-ins welcome. North Carolina

North Carolina. Learn about the different stations that existed along the coast and what

greatest representation in the race. In the last few years’, spritsail skiffs have battled for
this historic trophy, which resides in the Web Library. This race starts in front on the
