Preface Anyone who seeks sanctuary in the countryside sees how birds build their nests with twigs and feathers which they select with the greatest care. They build a safe place for themselves and their young, using the best materials that nature has to offer.
At Leolux, we feel inspired by this idea. We recognise the care you devote to your interior and we want to offer you the materials you need. The Leolux collection offers you the best designer products, but above all the ability to tailor each piece of furniture to your unique personal style. Design with tradition in mindVenlo: a provincial city in the south of the Netherlands, centrally located between Germany and Belgium. Here, in the heart of north-west Europe the Leolux family business has built design furniture to order for an international market since 1934.
Quality and ambition can allow a small company to expand rapidly. When the Sanders brothers decided in the ‘50s to produce modern furniture, Leolux changed from being a company with a handful of employees into a world player with idiosyncratic ideas about design, comfort and finish.
For three generations, Leolux has united the expertise of designers, craftsmen and artists. This creative cauldron gave rise to the Leolux world. A unique world that inspires and challenges.

Art Art inspires and enriches the interior. For decades, Leolux’s in-house artists have expressed their vision of living and life. Inspired by the Leolux world, they act out their own essential role; after all, their collaboration with other creative people - designers, photographers, stylists - leads to the most extraordinary forms of expression.
In previous years, artists including Clemens Briels, Sjer Jacobs, Wouter Stips and Jane Worthington have produced the covers for the Leolux brochures. For this collection, Olaf Hajek depicts the Leolux world. His painting ‘Antoinette’ on the cover shows a woman in blue tints, with birds building nests in her hair. She symbolises the freedom that the consumer has at Leolux to completely personalise a piece of furniture.

High-tech and pure craftsmanship At Leolux we don’t believe in mass-produced products. Every piece of furniture is unique and that is how they are made. With the craftsmanship of our joiners and foam specialists, our leather cutters, seamstresses and upholsterers. Their patient hands create the famous Leolux comfort.
High-quality technology is indispensable here: every piece of furniture travels large distances through the plant transported by conveyors, and innovative technology lightens the work of our leather cutters and joiners. This combination of high-tech and craftsmanship allows us to produce hundreds of unique products crafted to the individual wishes of the specific customer every day.
Because we are proud of our production process, we are pleased to show it to you. You can book a guided tour at Via Creandi, the visitors’ centre of Leolux in Venlo, via the website.

19Creator pictures your choices At Leolux, we always make to order, so that you can select the colours and materials of your furniture yourself. And that is of course a little stressful. What will your dream sofa look like when it arrives? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to picture your choices in advance?
Leolux has developed ‘Creator’ for you, a handy online tool that you can use very easily to display every conceivable choice on your screen. Lifelike. Choose the arrangement, the upholstery and the colours. Then the options, such as non-standard stitching or lacquer. Ready? You can zoom in and see the result from different angles. You can always make changes, just as long as it takes to make your Leolux product perfect.
Creator can be found on the product pages of the Leolux website. You can recognise the models for which Creator is available by the special logo in this brochure.

A Leolux sofa is at home in any contemporary interior. As an eye-catcher or a central point of rest for the entire family. Because comfort takes an important place in the Leolux philosophy, nearly all the Leolux design sofas have additional options: adjustable backs and seats, higher feet or firmer or softer foam. Choose your own comfort level, and the colours and covering you desire. A sofa in leather or rather fabric? You can even choose the colour of the stitching from Leolux’s extensive design collection.

There is so much more to tellThis compact review of our range provides all the information you need about the current Leolux models and comfort options. But there is so much more to say about Leolux. About our rich history, about designers and Leolux art, about the process involved in producing our designer furniture, leather and fabrics...
You can find interesting stories about these subjects in the Leolux yearbook alongside interviews with the makers. An inspiring brand book for the true Leolux fan. Visit the website and request your free copy today.
Three elements are definitive to the high comfort in Leolux furniture: expert prod-uct development, good materials and an eye for detail. On every piece of Leolux furniture, those things enjoy our fullattention in order to realise the grand cru among furniture for you.
Product developmentThere’s more to furniture than a good design. The product developers from Leolux translate the designer’s dream into a real sofa with the comfort you expect. The study of the human anatomy formsthe starting point thereby. Active sitting needs a fairly large seat height, high armrests and a smaller angle between the seat and the back, the so-called rake. It’s easier to stand up from a seat like that. The more passive the seat is, the more difficult it is to stand up; the seat is lower and deeper, the back has more rake and the armrests are lower. As soon as the dimensions and proportions of the furni-ture match the human dimension (ergo-nomics) and the function of the furniture, the basis has been laid for comforta- ble sitting.
The real Leolux comfort
Sitting pleasantly, a question of details
We have made it our mission: making sitting a pleasant experience. Because however creative and durable a design is, without the right comfort no sofa at all will make your living dreams come true.
Technology and materialsWithout solid construction, a sofa is going to display flaws over time. That is why the inside of the furniture is perhaps still more important than the outside for Leolux. The beech wood of the construction parts is costly, but strong and easy to work on. The glued joints make a Leolux frame virtually indestructible.
20
Leolux2017_EN_catalogus.indb 20 19-02-16 15:23
The building of quality bodies is a special-ism that Leolux has mastered from the outset. The choice of the springing and the right foam is also work for experts. The comfort is built up layer by layer by combining foams with different levels of stiffness with one another. That’s how the ultimate sitting experience is realised for each piece of furniture.
Eye for detailIn our vision, comfort is more than just a physical experience. The eye wants something too, so subtle details play an important role in the perception of
your furniture. That’s why we look for the loveliest embroidery, pay a lot of extra attention to the form of the feet and take another good look at the rounding of the cushions.
Only when everything’s right will a piece of furniture join the Leolux collection. With the right construction, the best materials and the loveliest details, it stands here in this book for you to discover and make your living dreams come true.
The product developers translate the designer’s dream into a real sofa

Leolux2017_EN_catalogus.indb 21 19-02-16 15:23
Artist and illustrator, Olaf Hajek is a sought-after visual artist. His colourful work can be found all over the world: in galleries and museums, on city maps and on the covers of books and magazines such as The Financial Times, Rolling Stone, Vogue and The Wall Street Jour-nal. However it is the advertising illustra-tions that have brought him global fame. His clients include Daimler Chrysler, Nike, Apple, Bacardi and Hermès. In 2016, Le-olux joined the ranks of those associated with the artist.
Olaf Hajek is best described as a very international artist. After training as a graphic designer in Düsseldorf, he moved to Amsterdam where he established the first contacts that his subsequent worldwide success would be built on. “At that time, 22 years ago, Amsterdam was an affordable and creative city. It was also familiar territory because I had lived in the Netherlands for a few years when I was younger. I moved to Berlin a few years later. It is for me without a doubt the city I want to live in. It is completely different
Eighth artist-in-residence
Olaf Hajek brings the yearbook to life What began in 1974 as a small initiative to allow regional artists
to exhibit in the Leolux Design Center Eindhoven has grown into a creative marriage between art and design. The artists-in-residence play an important part in the Leolux philosophy, driving the creativity and not least creating the context in which Leolux presents its furniture. From 2016 the eighth artist-in-residence, Olaf Hajek (1965), will be providing the illustrations for the Leolux print products such as this yearbook, and the key decorative elements for exhibition stands, design centres and shops. Hajek thus complements the world of Leolux.
from other German cities, with its own rules. Berlin is a metropolis with different areas, each of which has its own charac-ter. Another advantage: instead of bank-ers and lawyers, there are more artists, writers and start-ups. All people who turn their own passion into creativity.”
Unlike many other illustrators, Hajek’s paintings are still completely ‘artisanal’. Not using a computer, but a paintbrush and acrylic paint, often on paperboard or wood. In his work, the structures, the backgrounds, are just as important as the images in the foreground. The many cultural influences in his work reveal how well-travelled Hajek is. Olaf Hajek: “I work for clients in South America, the US, Asia and Europe. For the last 15 years, I have also been going to South Africa every year where I paint for a few months for a gallery which sells my work there. The cul-ture and aesthetics of that country have always been a great source of inspiration to me.” He combines artistic influences, for example from the work of Frida Kahlo, Botticelli, and the advertising posters
22
Leolux2017_EN_catalogus.indb 22 19-02-16 15:23
from 1960s Cuba, with the cultural inspiration he takes from his travels. This brings what he calls “a universal beauty”, with natural elements, fragments from fairy-tales and folklore motifs. Celebrity opens doors, but in essence little has changed for Hajek. He is modest and disciplined in delivering his paintings to businesses and galleries. It is not nec-essarily the best-known names that he is most proud of. “In the 20 years that I have been working as an illustrator, I have seen a lot of impressive, large clients come and go. But when you look back, it is of course the smaller, initial successes that really make you happy. My first commission for The New Yorker for example, that’s around 17 years ago now. It was not well paid and was certainly not my best work, but it felt like a great victory which gave me the confidence to continue working internationally.” Olaf Hajek
(Germany, 1965)
Hajek alternates his private work with il-lustrations for businesses and magazines. He believes each is just as important as the other: “I don’t really see the difference. I am an illustrator and an artist. My private work gives me greater scope to experi-ment, but at the same time my exhibitions influence my commissions. I look for the connection, and I love clients who give me artistic licence. I always value commis-sions like that.” Leolux gave him com-plete freedom. The first result from the collaboration: two paintings and colourful motifs in which Olaf Hajek expresses his personal vision of the world of Leolux. His ‘Antoinette’, on the cover of this yearbook, shows a woman in blue tints, with birds building nests in her hair. She symbolises the freedom that the consumer has at Leolux to completely personalise a piece of furniture; the consumer as a bird then, collecting the finest twigs and feathers to create a safe and warm nest.
Berlin is for me without a doubt the city I want to live in

Henk van der Vet
In the early seventies Leolux staged the first exhibitions in its Design Centers, which at the time were still called show-rooms. It was often local artists that were given a podium at Leolux. But they had awoken the interest of Leolux and the search started for more durable links. Artists began to influence the design of the Leolux Annuals and on one occasion were even involved in the design of furni-ture. The “in-house” artist had been born and art became a definitive component of the Leolux DNA.
Over the decades we now look back upon, a number of artists have played a main role in image forming at Leolux. Names like Clemens Briels and Sjer Jacobs occupied a place for many years and their work is still on offer. The alliances with Petra Hartman and Wouter Stips are of a later date. Work by the latter still defines the appearance of Leolux buildings, most prominently in the striking and huge facades of the Design Center in Krefeld (D) and the Via Creandi visitor’s center in Venlo (NL).
Leolux and art
Bond with a long historyLeolux has for decades believed that the interaction between artists, designers and traditional craftsmen stimulates creativity. Art has more to do with interiors that you may think at first sight. Art is inextricably linked with interior design; it gives a home personality and atmosphere.

Anchored in the pastThe first to bear the title of in-house artist is Henk van der Vet (1939). In the early nineties Leolux illustrates its annuals with his “photographics”. In this art form, which he bases on photography, Van der Vet combines various techniques. He himself calls it “Painting with photography”. Over the years, silkscreen prints have been made of his work for Leolux, which Leolux offers in its outlets.
From 1996 it’s the turn of Clemens Briels (1946). For the first time, this is a question of creative interaction. Not only does Briels set the theme, but he is actively involved in designing Furniture and fabrics as well. The point of departure is ‘Antipo-dism’, his theory of the extreme: there is light because there is darkness too.
The colourful yet abstract work of Briels is followed by the much less abstract “peo-ple” of Sjer Jacobs (1963). These scrawny figures are affable types and the onlooker can quickly relate to them. Sjer illustrates Leolux Annuals and delivers a colourful range of works both in ceramics and on canvas. His characterful figures in wire populate the Leolux sculpture garden at the production plant in Venlo.
Leolux comes across Petra Hartman (1960) at the time when flowers are her key theme. The opposing power of the flower results in illustrations in Annuals, paintings and sculptures. Later she creates “colourful” Works with black and white as the key tints.
Leolux and artist Wouter Stips (1944) begin their cooperation in 2005. His “world full of beauty and the special” is for several years the thread through the advertising campaigns, he illustrates various annuals and his work graces the facades of two Leolux buildings.
The lamps and vases in papier-maché from Jo Meesters (1974) are inextricably linked to the Leolux exhibition stand that was crowned with the Reddot Award in 2009. They return in the Leolux photo-graphs, as do his felt, flower carpets. In 2012 he produces three exclusive Leolux tapestries with flower and insect motifs. The annual that year is illustrated with them.
The richly coloured paintings from Jean Paul Marsman (1962) have the pace of the big city and are inspired by graffiti. His work adorns cups and saucers and in 2013 he creates a special art edition of the Leolux classic Kikko (page 73). For three years, her colourful paintings have determined the image of the Leolux trade fair stands, the website, yearbooks and brochures. In 2016, that role will be taken over by Olaf Hajek, the eighth Leolux house artist (page 22). Recently, Coen Blankwaard (1965) joined the group of Leolux artists with an extremely expres-sive translation of the Leolux world into images. You can read more about this on page 59.

Stimulate your sensesYou don’t choose a good piece of furniture in an afternoon of course. A visit to the Leolux Design Center is really worthwhile as part of the choice process. You dis- cover the world as Leolux sees it: a lovely and inspiring world to live really well in. You feel the texture of the fabrics; you smell the leather and see how our lac-quers can enrich a piece of furniture. The world of Leolux is also a world of art, where you can get acquainted with the work of the Leolux in-house artists. But above all it’s a world you can feel at home in, a world in which you experience what we mean by Leolux comfort.
Take the timeWhether a chair is really comfortable is something you usually only know once you’ve taken a break in the sofa of your choice. So take the time for a really long test-sit. The shape and finishing may well be important, but ultimately you want to sit in the sofa of your dreams for years to come. As far as we’re concerned, feel free to bring a good book with you. We really won’t mind. Got the children with you? No problem. They too can have a great time in the Leolux Design Center while you take the time to look around.
NB: Good interior advice costs time. So we always
ask you to make an appointment in advance. Don’t
forget to bring photos, dimensions and colour
samples with you.
The role of the Leolux Design Centers
See, feel and experienceWant to really experience Leolux? Then drop in at the Leolux Design Center one day. You will be warmly welcomed by our specialised advisors, who will acquaint you with everything Leolux has to offer without obligation and free of charge. And that is a lot more than just a lovely collection of seating ideas. The Design Center is about seeing, feeling and experiencing.
Reproduced in 3DAn interior sketch often expects too much of the imagination. That’s why we offer the option of a proposal in 3D, whereby we draw your living room in the computer, complete with doors, windows, floorings and light points. In that décor we place the Leolux furniture of your choice to produce a realistic picture of your future interior.
You’ll find the addresses and route de-scriptions to the Leolux Design Centers in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany on the last pages of this book.

The starting and ending point of the tour is the inspiring visitors’ center Via Crean-di, literally “the road of creation.” After the reception and a film acquainting you with our family business, former employees with many years of Leolux experience escort you over the catwalks through the factory. From above, they offer a perfect view over the production departments. The tour around the factory also address-es Leolux’s rich history, because it takes the visitor through the museum showing the finest memories of eighty years of Leolux design. You don’t need to worry about missing anything, because you can always hear your guide over the head-phones. So you get an entirely personal explanation of the production process,
Factory tour
Walk the road of creationWhat can be lovelier than watching a fine product being created in the hands of peo-ple? Leolux enjoys opening the doors of its factory in Venlo to anyone wanting to experience how our furniture is produced to order. Guided tours take place on a weekly basis, for individual guests, but also for groups. A fasci- nating stop during a day out in the region.
can ask questions and experience the tricks of the trade at first hand. And if you’ve recently ordered a piece of Leolux furniture from your dealer, you may even come across it during the tour. A unique opportunity to get to know the makers of your seating idea.
About the Visitors’ CenterVia Creandi is a dream long cherished at Leolux. The idea: show those inter-ested that Leolux really exists and that traditional skills and craftsmanship have not vanished from Western Europe. The building of a new logistics centre is the right moment to make the dream reality. The Via Creandi visitors center is opened to the public in the autumn of 2007. It
is built based on the design by Amster-dam architects Soeters van Eldonk. A characteristic red bridge links the existing production facility with a new logistics center and adjoining warehouse, in which Leolux also accommodates its visitors center. Here, with a fantastic view across the Meuse, visitors get acquainted with the world as Leolux sees it: modern and hospitable, with a feel for the arts.

ArtThe façade of Via Creandi strikes the eye as soon as you arrive. Wouter Stips was responsible for the biggest work of art for miles around. The combination with the red bridge provides for an energetic look that invites and inspires. Works by the Leolux artists can be seen here, and sometimes also bought. The Leolux world of the beautiful and special begins in Via Creandi, in the house of Leolux. Welcome!

Leolux seatextensionsMay we introduce you to seat extensions from Leolux? You could also call them Leolux comfort extensions. A Leolux footstool instantly conjures up the ideal lounger. And what do you think about some extra space where you can temporarily lay down your books and magazines? They’re easily within reach anytime you wish. Oh yes, we almost forgot ... our footstools naturally provide an extra seat, but you already knew that, of course.
