Blessings In A Backpack
Say you’re a kid. Say you’re a kid
whose only full meal is your schoollunch. Say you’re a kid who goeshome Friday at 3pm, and goeshungry until 8am Monday morningwhen you get back to school. Ifyou’re that kid, it can be tough.
Right now, 4,600 Waukesha Countykids go hungry every weekendbecause their families are struggling. In one sense, it doesn’t matter whatthe reason is: parents who areunemployed, on drugs, have anillness: the bottom line is that thesekids go hungry. I was listening to oneteacher who was recounting howshe was having lunch with somestudents last year. What was beingserved was a pork sandwich thatresembled a hockey puck. None ofthe kids would touch it- except forone little girl who was gobbling itdown. “This is delicious!” she said.
“It’s the first thing I’ve eaten sinceFriday!”
There’s an organization in Waukeshacalled Blessings in a Backpack. It’spart of a national organizationwhose mission is to provide food on
the weekends for elementary schoolchildren who might otherwise gohungry. The Waukesha County chapterstarted in 2012, serving 25 students atHadfield Elementary School. Last year,
they served over 900 children at fourWaukesha elementary schools. EveryFriday, volunteers fill backpacks (so thekids look like they’re just bringing
homework home) with basic food thatthe child would be able to fix forthemselves in case their parents aren’tfunctioning. Mac and cheese, raisins, protein bars: just basic nutrition to keepthem from going hungry.
It takes $100 to feed a child for a schoolyear. In June, July and August, ourSinging Bowl loose change offering will
go to help buy food in bulk for theprogram. The Oconomowoc ministeriumis looking into perhaps starting aprogram like this in our area… andmaybe exploring how we can helpschool-lunch-dependent kids during thesummer. Maybe we can help make theweekends something a kid can lookforward to. For more information,Google www.blessingsinabackpack.org
May our lives be blessed and be ablessing, dear friends!Pastor Hawkins

Getting to Know Our Prader-Willi Friends...
PRADER-WILLI SUNDAYS! We’re deepening ourelationships with the Prader-Willi community here inOconomowoc. In May, we had our Spring Choir Concer(with our Prader-Willi friends as our special guests.) July 10and Aug. 7, they’ll be invited to join us for Sundayworship! In order for this to happen, we have to put onour Hospitality Hats, which in this case (since one aspecof Prader-Willi disease is an insatiable compulsion to eat)we won’t have a coffee hour. Instead, we’ll be thefriendliest, nicest, most wonderful friends these teens andadults have ever met! This is a new offering to them and9:30 may be a little early for folks. We are not sure howmany individuals may come, but we want to extend theinvitation and for them to know that they are welcomeThe Aug. 7th service will be our Annual Blessing of the
Animals and will be held at 10:30 AM.
WHAT IS PRADER-WILLI SYNDROME, AND HOW DOESA LOVING FRIEND ACT Prader-Willi Syndrome is a rare, complex geneticsyndrome that affects many parts of the body. In infancy
this condition is characterized by weak muscle tone(hypotonia), feeding difficulties, poor growth, anddelayed development. Beginning around the age of 2-4affected individuals develop an insatiable appetitewhich leads to chronic overeating (hyperphagia) andobesity. The part of their brain that tells them that theyare full or satisfied after eating a good meal is brokenand they feel hungry all of the time. People with Prader-Willi syndrome typically have mild to moderateintellectual impairment and learning disabilitiesBehavioral problems are common, including tempeoutbursts, stubbornness, and compulsive behavior such astaking things that are of interest to them and picking attheir skin.
While visiting, they will be supervised by their trained staffhowever we can help by keeping our purses andpersonal belongings securely with us and leaving all foodor drink related items in our vehicles. Even something assmall as gum or cough drops can be tempting for themand can cause them stress. Individuals come from acrossthe country to live in our community. They love tosocialize and meet new friends. Feel free to say hello, asktheir name and see where they grew up. If someoneappears to be having a difficult time, we can help bygiving them space, looking in the opposite direction andbeing understanding. Staff is trained to support them andhave it all under control. If there is anything we can do to
help the staff, they will let us know. They do their bestwhen they are with others who make them feecomfortable and safe, making Emmanuel a wonderfuplace for them to worship and visit!
On Sunday, June 26th at 11 AM Melanie Laur, who worksin the PWS Community will conduct an informationasession to help us learn a bit more in preparation forhaving them as our guests for worship in July and AugustPlease plan to attend Melanie’s session on June 26th.

A MESSAGE FROMYOUR BOARD OF STEWARDS...
When thinking of a Stewardship message, I came acrossone of my mother's old books called “Apples of Gold” abook of mostly unknown short quips compiled by JoPetty. She states that although many of the originalauthors are unknown, she has confidence that theywould urge her “Do not inquire as to who said this, butpay attention to what is said.” I have chosen a few to
share: -Kris Davidson
The smallest good deed is better than thegrandest intention.
I can alter my life by altering my attitude of mind.
All people smile in the same language. It is not he who has little, but he who wants more,
who is poor.
A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.
The smile on your face is the l ight in the windowthat tells people that you are home.
You can't keep trouble from coming, but youneedn't give it a chair to sit on.
One of the biggest thrills in l ife comes from doinga job well.
It isn't the load that weights us down – it's the waywe carry it.
You can preach a better sermon with your lifethan with your lips.
If anyone speaks evil of you, so l ive that none willbelieve it.
There is no better exercise for strengthening theheart than reaching down and lifting people up.
There is no right way to do the wrong thing. Learn from the mistakes of others – you can't live
long enough to make them all yourself. May you live all the days of your life.
