ITH THIS SECOND EDITIONofthe Inclusive Alaska Guide, we are

proud to celebrate 76 champions of

LGBTQ workplace inclusion. This guide features

twice as many businesses than the previous

edition, released just 6 months ago.

    Locally-owned businesses in Alaska recognize

the value of inclusive workplace policies andpractices. Launch partner, Michelle Egan, Director

of Corporate Communications at Alyeska Pipeline,

says that as a company, we need to hire the

very best, most qualified people. Its simply a

business matter. You can read more of Michelles

story, and those of other local business leaders

throughout this guide. We hope the Inclusive Alaska Guidehelps you

identify local, inclusive businesses to support and

select in your next job search. It is critical that all of us, especially lesbian,

gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Alaskans, are judged based on

performance and qualificationsnothing more and nothing less.

1+1 Alaska, a project of the One Anchorage, One Economy Live.

Work.Play Initiative, was launched in collaboration with the AnchorageChamber of Commerceand the Anchorage Economic Development

    Corporation.

An exciting new tool, the 1+1 Alaskasurvey (found at 1plus1ak.org), is a

catalog of best practices, highlighted by a series of questions, such as:

How welcoming is your business to LGBTQ employees

and consumers? Are your personnel policies inclusive?

Do employers and employees receive a basic

orientation about gender identity and sexual

    orientation?

Does some of your business community relations/grant

    monies go to LGBTQ nonprofits?

These questions are not meant to be hurdles to success. These

questions are actually opportunities in disguise . . . opportunities for

businesses to open their doors more widely and, as a result, increase their

    bottom line.

Throughout the process, Identity, Inc.offers businesses support by

offering LGBTQ cultural competency training, policy development, and

inclusive personnel procedures. This project is sponsored by Identity, Inc.

    and Pride Foundation.

ichelle Egan, Alyeska Pipelines Director of

    Corporate Communications, remembers when

she worked at the Anchorage School District.

While I was there, she said, some students

came forward saying that the [nondiscrimination] policies

at the ASD did not protect them and that they were being

    bullied at school.

At that time, Michelle worked with former ASDSuperintendent Carol Comeau. Together they learned that

these LGBT students were being harassed because of their

sexual orientation and gender identityand that the policies

needed to change to protect them.

At first we looked at the policy and thought that it

seemed broad enough, she recalls. The more young people

came to Carol and shared their stories with her, the more shecouldnt ignore it any more.

After some turbulent discussions with the School Board

and broader community, the policies that protect students

from bullying, harassment, and discrimination were updated

to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

Michelle said, Carol put her foot down and said were not

going to have kids that arent comfortable or safe at school, or

teachers who dont have the policy support to intervene whena student is bullied.

Her passion for inclusion and the safety of students

followed her to Alyeska Pipeline. So naturally, when a group

of business owners led by Glenn Cravez told her about the

One Anchorage, One Economy effort, she did not hesitate to

    join.

Alyeska has an open work environment, she explained. That means we believe the more forthright and open our

employees can be about the workplace, about safety issues,

about environmental issues, the better off well be and safer

we are here in the workplace.

That includes a level of decorum and a high level respect

we have for each other at Alyeska. Michelle feels that this

culture of being open and honest will also make it possible for

Alyeska to recruit great employees. Also as a company, we need to hire the very best, most

qualified people, she said. Its simply a business matter.

hen you walk into the offices of KPB Architects,

you notice over a dozen individuals productively

working in a welcoming, bright, and open space.

Mike Prozeralik, the firms president, says that

we pride ourselves on being different, being very attentive

to our clients, and creating spaces and places that are theirs.

He chairs Anchorage Economic Development Corporations

Live.Work.Play initiative, an effort to make the city attractiveto young professionals.

When the opportunity came for KPB Architects to join 1+1

Alaska, it was a no-brainer. Being inclusive and looking at

our economy as a whole, he said, strengthening the ability

to be a diverse community promotes the economic growth of

    our community.

For Mike, it was easy to join the effort. He thought thatbeing inclusive and welcoming was how everyone views the

    world.

I thought discrimination was over, he explains, thats

    not the case.

I learned a lot about the difficulties that the LGBT

community was facingand I had no idea. The circles I

interact with are supportiveyou dont see the other side.

As I listened to the stories of the LGBT community, thingsbecame more apparent. I felt that I could help solve a wrong.

After hearing stories from coworkers and other members

of the LGBT community, he began advocating for inclusive

workplaces, and eventually gave testimony to the Anchorage

Assembly in support of updating the nondiscrimination

    ordinance.

Now, Mike sees more people uniting and getting behind itthan fracturing and trying to oppose it.

As a lean, efficient firm of 14 employees, Mike doesnt see

why any organization would want to limit their options.

Theres a limited talent pool of individuals in the

community, he said. So it doesnt benefit the local economy

to restrict who employers can hire. He feels that especially as

millennials start to enter more of the workforce, its important

to have access to more talent. They wont stay, they wont come here, he continues.

When millennials see intolerant organizations, leaders, or

approaches to business theyre not going to work there. If

theyre not an inclusive organization, theyre going to find

    somewhere else to work.

t 63, Scott Allen is hard to miss, and he knows it. I

cant walk into the store and hope to be missed, he

    observed.

So as the owner and general manager of Trailboss

Solutionsa small construction and home renovation

companyhe takes pride in doing right by his clients, family,

    and community.

Its a small community, so you see your clients at the store

and on the street, he said. I want to be able to say hi, and

give a hug. With some clients, were working on their fourthproject.

This sense of doing right by others guides both his

personal and business decisions. A framed sign with these

values is featured prominently on the wall of their client

    conference room.

Values like win-win, integrity, commitment, creativity,

clients, teamwork, trust, and success shape how Trailboss

selects their employees and how their employees work with

    clients.

Construction is a difficult industry, he said. Its often

remote and its not a contained environment. Theres a lot of

trust in your employeeswere very selective in who we bring

on, and theres standards we hold them to.

Trailboss Solutions wants to do right by others, which is

why theyve had an equality sign displayed on their brochuresand website since they opened for business nine years ago.

Scott also has family that is a part of the LGBT community,

and knows how hard its been on them.

Just because you dont understand someone, doesnt

mean you cant accept them, he said.

Just because you dont understand them,

doesnt give you the right to discriminate.

Because they value inclusivity so highly,

place clients first, and treat their employees

with trust, Trailboss Solutions has projects

    already scheduled into 2017.
