Bartow County and City of Cartersville Schools recycled a total of
574,370 lbs in the 16/17 school year (an increase of 12,030 lbs over
last year’s results). This, the thirteenth (13th) consecutive year of
the Keep Bartow Beautiful School Recycling Contest netted 574,370
lbs of recycling into our "Materials Recovery Facility" saving very
valuable landfill space hopefully delaying expansion needs into the
future. Every individual school’s program is different but what re-
mains the same is that each school has at least one very important
lead teacher who also has his/her principal’s support. The most win-
ning schools also have an involved community that supports their
program through recycling from homes and possibly businesses.
This year’s first place winners in the Elementary School Division have
been in the running since 2011 when three schools (Adairsville, Mis-
sion Road and Euharlee Elementary Schools) were recognized with a
Wildlife Wonders Show. They have held onto First Place since 2012.
Other schools like Clear Creek Elementary School (Principal Dr. Kelly
Wade and Lead Teacher Susan Gilmore) have gotten creative using their recycling numbers to help win an
entertaining and motivational visit by “Freddie” from the
Atlanta Falcons. (See Picture above). They also created
a motivational movie to encourage recycling . (See:

Tracie Varvel and Principal Sharon Collum)
(144,460 LBS OR 297.9 LBS PER STUDENT)
None of the school programs are
mandatory, and Keep Bartow Beauti-
ful relies on the schools themselves
to develop and sustain their pro-
grams, while offering assistance and
guidance as requested. Teachers,
staff, and student teams spend one
or more hours weekly throughout
the school year collecting cans,
bottles, cardboard and paper from
classrooms, teacher’s lounges, lunch-
rooms, gyms and ballfields through-
out the school campus. Keep Bartow
Beautiful works with each school to
address the needs of the school re-
garding recycling containers and
their placement, and provides most
of the bins for the campus programs,
as funding is available. Many of the
recycling team teachers keep up with
the school recycling bins, collecting
them at year’s end, and redistrib-
uting them to each classroom at the
start of the new school year.
