Dear Friends,It’s been 33 years since The New York Times, in June of 1981, reported the first cases of
what later became known as AIDS. In those earliest days, gay activists and rogue doctors
sometimes seemed to be the only ones paying attention...possibly, one of the reasons it
took 15 years to develop effective medications.
With your support, Desert AIDS Project has always had the courage to imagine a better world.
Luckily for our community, Desert AIDS Project was there almost from the very beginning
— thanks to volunteer nurses and social workers committed to doing more than watching
helplessly while people died long before their time. Among those who heard this early
battle-cry to help the dying was Steve Chase, the volunteer/donor/board member, who
was so instrumental in helping establish Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.) as the vital force for
good that it continues to be.
Today, D.A.P. is the most comprehensive resource and service provider for people in the
Coachella Valley and beyond who are living with or affected by HIV or AIDS. That’s due,
in no small part, to the annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala that now raises more
than $1.3 million for client services.
“Much accomplished, much to do.”
Those were the words of Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the world’s foremost HIV researchers,
who was honored at the 2009 gala with the Science and Medicine Award. Five years later, we
continue to make strides in preventing HIV and in caring for those infected. Even so, in this
fourth decade of the AIDS epidemic...AIDS is not over. It remains an epidemic, world-wide as
well as right here in our community. There is no magic bullet just yet — there is no vaccine
against HIV, no cure for AIDS. The work of Desert AIDS Project will never be done until
everyone living with HIV or with full-blown AIDS in our community is being helped to live a
longer, stronger life.
But we believe strongly in the philosophy that we must “think globally, act locally” to help
create a world without HIV and an AIDS-free generation. Let’s imagine we have the power to
do just that. Then let’s make it happen...together.

Desert AIDS Project treats and supports the whole person...all under one roof!!
D.A.P. has become a model of “holistic-care-done-right” for other AIDS service organizations. But the
comprehensive and compassionate care offered by our doctors, nurses, and medical assistants only
begins to tell why. Home health nurses and social workers for clients who can’t leave their homes,
behavioral health services specialists, and Riverside County’s first HIV-specialty dental clinic are also
always at the ready at our 3.5 acre campus in Palm Springs...that even includes a low-income housing
complex for people living with HIV, as well as an on-site lab and pharmacy.
Our medical case managers tie all of these services together, along with a complete set of wraparound
services that includes food, housing, transportation, and so much more. Also under our roof is a Client
Community Center — a welcoming space designed to combat HIV stigma and isolation with social and
educational activities, including skills-for-living and back-to-work programs.
Our volunteer ranks have now swelled to more than 500 people who donate tens of thousands of hours
to D.A.P. each year, including those who help us produce a weekly, electronic newsletter for clients...
run our four Revivals stores...and produce fundraisers, like our annual Steve Chase Humanitarian
Awards gala.
But we couldn’t do ANY of it without your support.
If you’ve never seen Desert AIDS Project “in action”...we invite you to come for a tour. See for yourself
why visitors almost always leave D.A.P. saying, “I had no idea you do ALL OF THIS!!”

The 21st Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala,
presented by Integrated Wealth Management
Once again, you and 1500 of your closest friends will help us to raise just a small part of the money
necessary to fund the vital client services Desert AIDS Project provides. But while we’re providing
the services our clients most need, we are working just as hard to prevent new HIV infections and
advocating for those whose voices may not be heard.
We like to think the famed interior designer who is the namesake of this event
would be proud.
Nobody loved a party more than Steve Chase! He may have even rubbed elbows with some of the
honorees, award presenters, and entertainers who have graced our stage in the past years. Just a
few of them include:
Ann-Margret, Annette Bloch, Diahann Carroll, Carol Channing, Kristen Chenoweth,
Joan Collins, Melissa Etheridge, Queen Latifah, Andy Linsky, Wynonna Judd,
George Hamilton, Tom Hanks, Senator Ted Kennedy, Patti LaBelle, Angela Lansbury,
Judith Light, Shirley MacLaine, Bob Mackie, Barry Manilow, Harold Matzner, Liza Minnelli,
Prof. Luc Montagnier, Megan Mullally, Pauley Perrette, Debbie Reynolds,
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and so many more!
We invite you to do more than IMAGINE a better future with us...help CREATE it!!
