Our Programs
What are magnet programs?
Magnet programs offer a theme or focus that is designed
to give students an opportunity to explore a special
interest, gift, talent or skill. A magnet school may feature
one or more magnet programs.
Why do we have magnet programs?
Magnet programs were started during the
1991-1992 school year as a voluntary desegregation
plan. Today, Duval Countys magnet programs are the
centerpiece of the Districts School Choice Program and
promote diversity in our schools.
What is a dedicated magnet school?
A dedicated magnet school does not have a set boundary.
All students who attend the school apply for acceptance
through the magnet lottery. Students who live in the
former attendance area of a dedicated magnet school
receive rst preference for admission.
When do I have to decide?
The application season is January and February withapplications due on Friday, February 27, 2015. Applications
received by the deadline are processed in the magnet
lottery. Applications received after the deadline are placed
if and when space becomes available. You do not receive
special consideration for submission of an application
before the deadline.
How do I get an application?
Each student currently enrolled in a Duval County Public School
in Grades Pre-K 10 will have a preprinted application available
through the Parent/Grade Portal in early January. Additionally,
applications are available at the School Choice Ofce, located in
the district administration building at 1701 Prudential Drive and
on our website, www.duvalchoice.com or www.duvalschools.org.
You may also apply online by visiting www.duvalchoice.com. You
may submit a paper or electronic application to the School Choice
Ofce on or before February 27, 2015.
Is a magnet school better than the non-magnet school
that is close to my home?
No. Magnet Programs offer something different, but they are not
designed to be better than any other school in the District.
Am I guaranteed to get in if I apply?
Unfortunately, there are no guarantees. Admission is determined
by a lottery that is based on the number of openings and the
number of applications received for a school or program.
Can anyone apply to a magnet school?Yes! With very few exceptions, all of Duval Countys magnet
programs are open admissions. This means that all students may
apply and have a chance to be selected through the magnet lottery.

What is a Choice School?
All elementary, middle and high schools offer one or more
special programs designed to attract students to the school.
Why are all schools Choice Schools?
The District has established innovative programs and offerings in
neighborhood schools, making them good options for students.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes; dedicated magnet schools are considered magnet schools.
Do the Choice Schools offer a special program or theme?
Yes; each Choice School offers something special. There are
Choice Schools with a Career Academy; Choice Schools with an
Acceleration Program; Choice Schools with a Special Program;
and there are Choice Schools with a Magnet Program.
How do I apply for a Choice Program?
A Special Transfer Option application is used for most non-
magnet Choice Programs. The exceptions include char ter
schools and the High School Acceleration Programs. You may
submit a Special Transfer Option application to the SchoolChoice Ofce on or before May 15, 2015.
Am I guaranteed to get in if I apply?
No; just like the magnet programs, there is a lottery based on
the number of openings versus the number of applicants for
each grade level. Schools that are overutilized cannot open
seats for applications from outside the schools attendance area.
Is there transportation to a Choice School?
No; parents are responsible for transportation to and from
a Choice School for a student who does not live within theattendance boundary of the Choice School.
Choice Programs
How do I apply for a High School Acceleration Program?
High School Acceleration Programs are designed to serve their own
neighborhood students rst. Schools that have space after serving
the neighborhood population may open seats for students from
outside the attendance area. High School Acceleration Programs
have admission criteria and applications are submitted directly to the
school. Applications are rank ordered and placement is offered to
the most highly qualied students. Students accepted into a High
School Acceleration Program from outside the attendance area must
also submit a Special Transfer Option application.
What is a Charter School?
Charter Schools are public schools that operate on a performance
contract with the Duval County School Board and are an
expanded school choice option for students. Charter Schools
are excluded from many of the regulations that govern traditional
public schools but they are held accountable for academic results
and nancial solvency.
What is a Career Academy?
A Career Academy is a school within a school program that
features a family-like atmosphere, integration of academic andcareer-related curricula, and the involvement of employers in a
variety of roles. The academic coursework is coordinated with a
career focus and is served by a small group of teachers who work
as a team to plan and manage the program.
What is a Middle School Acceleration Program?
A Middle School Acceleration Program is a middle school version
of the High School Acceleration Programs such as International
Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), Cambridge
Secondary 1 or Early High School.
What is a Choice School with a Magnet Theme?
A Choice School with a magnet theme is the new way of referring
to a non-dedicated magnet elementary, middle or high school.
The magnet theme is still in place at these schools.

based on choice and prior ity. All students par ticipate in the magnet program(s).
A high school acceleration program offers highly motivated students the opportunity toearn college credits while in high school. The District offers AP Honors, Early College,
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), and Cambridge Secondary

quadrant of the city so that all high school students have access to one of the four programs

A lottery is the process used to select students for a magnet school and a choice school
as well as for a char ter school when the number of applications exceeds the number of
available openings. The lottery for choice schools is called the Special Transfer Option
lottery.
A magnet program is a specialized theme that allows students to explore a special talent,
skill, gift or interest. A magnet school can offer one or more magnet programs or themes.
A magnet school offers a specialized program or theme that is designed to attract students
from other schools for the purpose of promoting or maintaining a diverse student
population in all schools. Students apply to attend a magnet school that is not their
neighborhood school.
A magnet student is a student who attends a school that is not his/her neighborhood school
for the purpose of par ticipating in a magnet program.
A neighborhood school has a specied attendance boundary and serves students residing
within the boundary. Every residence in Duval County has a projected elementary, middle
and high school based on the residential address. Some neighborhood schools have a
magnet or choice program that ser ves both the neighborhood students as well as students
who apply to attend the school from outside the specied attendance area.
A priority is a weight that is used in the magnet lottery and the Special Transfer Option
lottery according to the applicants par ticular situations.
Some neighborhood schools have a magnet program that operates as a school within a
school. This means that there is a specialized program housed at the school that serves a
specic group of neighborhood students and magnet students but not the entire student
population of the school. These are primarily high school programs. Some school within a
school magnet programs are also career academies.
A special program refers to a program that is offered as an attractor by a choice school.
Some neighborhood schools that have a magnet program are whole school magnets. This
means that all students who attend the school par ticipate in and benet from the magnet
program regardless of being a student who lives in the attendance area or a student who
comes to the school from outside the attendance area on a magnet assignment. These are
primarily elementary and middle school programs.

transpor tation is provided to any elementar y student living in
the same zone that their magnet school is located. Also, some
elementary magnet schools provide transportation to students
living outside their zones. You will see these schools listed with
the elementary zone maps. The distance to a bus stop can be up
to one mile from the residence, or up to one and one-half
(1 ) miles if the neighborhood school is used as a bus stop.
Some elementary magnet students will transfer at a hub site
(another school) and ride another bus to their magnet school.
The afternoon services may be the reverse.
