DONGDAEMUNPUBLIC BATH

PROJECT

SITEANALYSIS

OVERALL SITE CONDITION The over all site area is sparead from Dongdaemun to Hyehwamun including Iwha town and Naksan Park, part of Daehak-ro and Catholic University. Centered around the City Wall, the site is consist of stiff slop and the highest point of it is the Naksan Park. The context of the site is complicated deu to its natural formation and diverse programs mixed on the site. Unlike places like Gangnam, this area has been formed naturally over time. As a result, the tissue of the town is irregular and relatively small. This makes the site interesting but complicated at the same time.

The specific site for this project is located at the boundary of Iwha town and the Naksan Park. The Site is also on a stiff slope and dimention is about 40mX25m. Its two sides are surrounded by residential buildings and other two are green spaces. As the site is located on a high level, view to the Iwha town and the seoul city is available.

ROAD CONDITION Dark gray area of above diagram means road.

SITE PROGRAM In above diagram, yellow blocks mean residences, green means green space, red means historical buildings, and blue means educational buildings. The site of the project is surrounded by green space and residential buildings. As there are huge cluster of residential buildings, a lack of the convenience facilities is one of the problem of the area.

DESIGNAPPROACH

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE SITE On the site, there are some impressive things but large clusters of residential buildings were the most impressive to me. They are built in differenf time by different people in different shape. However, somehow, they creates harmony. So I pulled out keyword, "Order and Disorder" from the site.

VORONOI DIAGRAM To embody the characteristic of the site and the keyword "Order and Disorder", I thought that Voronoi Diagram can be my design language. Through the Voronoi, I can realize form that looks irregular but regular at the same time.

Voronoi Diagram is formed by points and a rule. Each point ditermines diagrams overall form and the number of voronoi cells.

DESIGN APPROACH First, I set a box to regulate the boundary of voronoi diagram in 3d. Then, I spread random points to create voronoi cells and created voronoi cells in the box. At last, I put programs to the cells.

PROGRAM / STRUCTURE / ELEVATION AND MATERIAL Program Main programs of the building is public bath and sub program is commnunity center as I wanted to offer a place where people can gether and spend time together. A diagram above shows programs of cells.

Structure I thought the edges of the cells can act as a structural system.

Elevation and Material I wanted to show voronoi pattern on both inside and outside so adopted the voronoi pattern of the building. To make diverse spaces and bright interior, I used materials with different transparency.
