UNDERSTANDING THE RIVER:

At you table use the paper arrows and describe the connection in writing on the arrow.

___ eats ___

UNDERSTANDING THE RIVER:

Now let’s add another element of the system.

CONNECTING WITH SCIENCE CONCEPTS

• Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems

• Cycle of Matter and Energy transfer in Ecosystems

• Ecosystem Dynamics, Functioning, and Resilience

Read the descriptions and have a table discussion about how this model illustrates some of these concepts.

QUESTIONS AND PREDICTIONS

WHAT WILL THE DATA LOOK LIKE?

SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING PRACTICES

Read descriptions of the 8 scientific and engineering practices outlined in A Framework for K-12 Science Education:

Which practices did we employ?

How did we apply them?

SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING PRACTICES

Science Practices:

1. Asking Questions and Defining Problems

2. Developing and Using Models

3. Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

4. Analyzing and Interpreting Data

5. Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking

6. Constructing Explanations

7. Engaging in Argument from Evidence

8. Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information

IS IT A MODEL?

Revisit the science probe:

Did your ideas about models change?

Would you revise or expand upon your previous explanation?

Focused Reading Strategy

Mark the text using the following symbols:

Got it. I know or understand this.

EXIT TICKET

What do you think science is?

What do your students think science is?

Look back at your original ideas. How has your thinking changed?

Revise or add to your thinking in another color.

EXIT TICKET

When reflecting on the practices and long term science investigations, where would you like to focus on deepening your knowledge this year?

Record your ideas on a sticky note and place it on your exit ticket.
