Life outside the classroom.Your life outside the classroom at BC is just as important to us as the knowledge you’re gaining in class. There are many ways for you to stand out, but the first step is just to get involved. Experiences outside of the classroom compliment your formal educational experience by helping to facilitate your holistic development. Life doesn’t happen in a textbook, nor does the total Brevard experience. We help students by facilitating their growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a cohesive campus community.
Student InvolvementProgramming on the BC campus is driven almost entirely by student leadership through the Campus Activities Board (CAB) with the support of almost 30 active student organizations and clubs. Saturday nights, CAB Wire features comedians, live music, and more.Students can build leadership and problem solving skills, while networking with other students, staff, faculty, and administrative leaders through the Student Government Association and our campus-wide shared governance model. You know what they say, “all work and no play…”. Whether you are interested in staying healthy or simply blowing off some steam after an exam, you can do both by enjoying friendly competition through the many different intramural sports we offer.Through the Campus and Outdoor Recreation program, students are able to experience programs that will lead to learning new skills, developing leadership abilities, and enhancing overall wellness while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Whether you are a skilled rock climber or interested in climbing into a kayak for the very first time, we’ve got all kinds of opportunities for all types of students.

Community LivingLiving on campus is an integral part of the total educational experience at Brevard College. Community Living staff members assist students in learning how to live in community on an exciting residential campus. The friendships and life experiences developed by living on campus provide students with many unexpected benefits that positively impact the whole student…academically and socially. Whether in a traditional residence hall, a suite or apartment-style room, living and learning together makes the whole Brevard experience more meaningful. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC if you live right in the middle of where the action is.

Center for Multicultural and Service InitiativesTrue to the Brevard College motto “Learn in order to serve”, the Center for Multicultural and Service Initiatives (CMSI) is a student-focused office that provides resources and educational opportunities for the campus community. CMSI provides students with volunteer opportunities based on academic and personal interests as well as providing the town of Brevard and surrounding community with passionate and energetic volunteers that will make a difference. Alternative Fall and Spring Break trips, MLK Celebration activities, service to the local domestic violence shelter, preparing meals for the homeless, even working in a community garden are all part of the CMSI outreach program. Service related to federal, state, local and institutional programs is also coordinated through the CMSI. Federal Work Study students are able to work off campus at an approved local non-profit. NC-ACTS!, an AmeriCorps program, rewards students who have served 300 hours in their local community with a $1,100 Education Award. Our EMERGE program fosters positive relationships between current top BC students and incoming new students in order to support academic success and personal growth during the first year of college.
Wellness CenterThe Stamey Wellness Center offers a warm reception area where students are welcomed and assisted in connecting with professional services and personal help as quickly as possible. Counseling Services provides resources to support and enhance the success of students in the academic and social environment of the college as well as in the personal and developmental aspects of their lives. Medical Services are available to assist students who are sick and to teach preventive measures to stay healthy in order to best achieve academic success. Our Religious Life program is inspired by the ministry of the United Methodist Church and welcomes a diversity of religious preferences among the student body who seek to learn in an atmosphere of nurturing one’s spiritual path.
Other unique BC Experiential ProgramsInstitute for Women in Leadership IWIL is a residential learning community that fosters confident, inquisitive young women with a passion for local service. Through mentoring and experiential leadership programs, IWIL women develop into Brevard College leaders ready to also serve their communities upon graduation.Study Abroad Students can pursue a minor in Spanish while experiencing immersion in the culture as well as the language during a semester in Costa Rica. Students interested in studying in Europe will find opportunities in London each year. Working together with BC faculty and staff in our Academic Enrichment Center, students have many additional options for study abroad through our membership in the Appalachian College Association. Additionally, recent trips to Egypt and Iceland are examples of experiences abroad for credit between semesters. Voice of the Rivers Voice of the Rivers (VOR) is one of the hallmarks of Brevard College. VOR consists of a select number of BC students and faculty who engage in a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. Students from any major on campus traverse a river from its source to its end researching its ecosystem, developing peer and faculty bonds, presenting information to communities along the way, and earning academic credit.
