The University of Alaska Natural Heritage Program and the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service were partners in this survey.

Botanists, soil scientists and freshwater ecologists identified and collected various samples. These samples will be used to characterize the condition of wetlands on the Arctic Coastal Plain within the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.

Fifty sites were selected for this study, 40 of them were randomly chosen and 10 were targeted as impacted or potentially impacted. Photo by Terri Lomax

Botanists identified plants within five 10 m2 transects at each site.

Soil profiles were described and samples were taken for bulk density, enzymes, soil isotopes and other indicators of hydric condition.

The “unofficial” partner of this survey: mosquitoes!
