WELCOME TO THE 2010 FREE FESTIVALWelcome to our programme! We’re in our 7th year and 2010 sees our biggest ever Free Festival programme, with over 4,300 performances of 300 shows – an amazing figure if you consider in 2004 we started with only three shows in a single venue! This year we have brought together another huge selection from around the world, ranging from headline comedy performers, hit cabaret shows, challenging theatre, outdoor stages full of entertainment, music and bands, children’s shows, magicians, storytellers, opera, musicals and much, much more!

PUTTING THE ALTERNATIVE BACK INTO THE FRINGEAt the Free Festival we’re really trying to put the alternative back into the Fringe! A Festival isn’t just about star names - like the Fringe pioneers back in 1947 who started the Edinburgh Fringe as an alternative to the international festival, the Free Festival now exists as an alternative within the Fringe, where performers are not charged thousands of pounds to take part, and audiences aren’t charged high ticket prices. The Free Festival is your chance to go and see something you would never normally see.

WHO ARE WEThe Free Festival is organised by Alex Petty, of Laughing Horse Comedy, along with a large team of volunteers and all of the performers producing and running shows. It’s a big team effort and we all hope you enjoy our 2010 programme, which we think is more fun filled than ever!

GREENING THE FRINGEThere is a huge amount of paper printed at the Fringe each year, and that is one of the reasons we keep this brochure as a small listings leaflet, instead of producing a monumental brochure that would take up 100 pages. Keep hold of this leaflet to remind you where our shows are, and if you want to find out more about our shows have a look at our website www.freefestival.co.uk
