RESILENTbut the H
Kenwood Academy Vocal Music Department is where the future of choral music flourishes. We strive to
develop and cultivate talented young men and women from various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds
represented in Kenwood Academy High School’s richly diverse school community. Kenwood Academy High
School is a neighborhood public school, located on the south side of Chicago in the historic Hyde Park
community. It educates students ranging in grade levels 7 - 12 and most recently received the Silver Medal
by US News and World Report for its outstanding academic achievement. The school is under the
leadership of Elizabeth A. Kirby (Harvard Alum). Ms. Kirby became a part of the Kenwood family in 1999,
in which she was awarded the prestigious Golden Apple Award. In June 2005, she was been elevated to
principal of Kenwood Academy. In addition, Ms. Kirby received the New Leaders High School Principal
Award at the 1st Annual New Leaders for New Schools Chicago Program. As a new team member of
Mayor-Elect Ralm Emmanuel's community leadership team, Ms. Kirby is committed to ensuring high
academic achievement for every student, as well as promoting achievement through the arts. As a part of
the music enrichment program at Kenwood Academy, KAHS Concert Choir has provided thousands of
talented students access to music education, counseling, mentoring and recreational programs.
Kenwood Academy Concert Choir is comprised of a skillful group of young people who learn how they can
actively engage in the world of classical and contemporary music. For more than thirty years, Kenwood’s
music department has been at the pinnacle of musical excellence. Concert Choir has received Superior
ratings during annual competitions for nearly all of that time, which has earned them the ability to become
“Ambassadors of Vocal Music Excellence” for not only Kenwood Academy but also for the Chicago Public
Schools at large.
In addition to local performances, some of Concert Choir’s most notable performances have included
performing in seven cities in Switzerland including Basel, Bern, and Zurich; performances for noted
journalist Vernon Jarrett, former Chicago Symphony Choral Conductor Margaret Hills, Rosa Parks, the
Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Maya Angelou, and Dr. Betty Shabazz (the widow of
Malcolm X); the inaugural event for Dorothy Brown, Cook County Treasurer; a senatorial campaign
fundraiser for President-Elect Barack Obama; the City of Chicago’s Annual Interfaith Breakfast Celebrating
the Life of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley; and most recently an
appearance at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival with Grammy Award winning and legendary jazz vocalist,
Cassandra Wilson, Grammy and Oscar Award winner, Jennifer Hudson; in addition to performing for
Chinese President Hu Jintao and Mayor-Elect Ralm Emmanuel. Although the choir has performed for a
multitude of audiences internationally, each performance leaves an endearing mark on the hearts of each
member.
Your support will enable us to make a positive difference in the lives of talented young people each year.
Kenwood Academy Concert Choir is able to develop a student’s sense of their own capacity for excellence
and a deeper appreciation for the importance of social pluralism, cultural difference, and the need to respect
and appreciate people with different values, backgrounds, and experiences.
One by one, our singers in turn shape the future for us all. Essential to that future is the successful
completion of our first annual “Kenwood Academy Concert Choir Partnership Program” pledge campaign.
With an ambitious annual goal of $100k, we are confident that with your committed support we will meet
this goal by the end of the 2010-2011 school year. The successful completion of this campaign will not be
the end, but only the beginning of what must become an ongoing effort to create a sound financial
foundation for the students of this choral group.
The goal is not to establish a huge endowment or reserve, but to enable the Choir to achieve a reasonable
level of ongoing financial support. To maintain and continue to enhance the programs of Kenwood Academy
Concert Choir, we must generate support on an annual basis. This is our challenge.
Through the brilliant leadership of our choral director, Richard Nunley Jr. and the perfect background and
experience to succeed that our parent volunteers have committed to, we are well-positioned to enhance the
future of our Concert Choir.
We look forward to working with you as we strive to provide the highest artistic excellence for these gifted
students here in Chicago. As you review the various sponsorship opportunities available, please note that
Kenwood Academy Concert Choir has become a passport for young people of all races and economic
backgrounds to learn not only about this wonderful city, but the richness of our diverse world. Our students
are ultimately the fundamental reason of why we implore your support for what we plan to accomplish.
Kenwood Academy Concert Choir students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds come together to learn
and perform. They not only learn teamwork, but also respect for each other due to the passion they share.
In addition, research shows that music education dramatically stimulates learning and enriches students’
lives.
The Kenwood Academy Concert Choir Parent Association (KCCP) are therefore reaching out to ask for
your fiscal support. If you choose to help us in this pursuit, you will be investing in today’s youth and
tomorrow’s citizens and leaders. Won’t you please be a part of this effort? Please review the information
included in this packet to learn more about our sponsorship level programs and what steps to take to
become an important part of the KCC Partnership Program.
