Contents MissionThe University of Maryland School of Pharmacy leads pharmacy education, scientific

dean’s Message
Reflecting on the past, but planning for the future is the theme of this year’s Annual Report. The 2008-2009 academic year, presented inthesepages,wasquiteunlikeanyotherinourSchool’shistory.Weenjoyedremarkablesuccessinallofourendeavors,butwealsoex-perienced unprecedented financial uncertainty. Budgetcutscausedustoexamineeveryinchof our operations to see where we could be more prudent. Without sacrificing faculty and staffpositions,wewereabletoreduceexpenseswhile continuing to offer an outstanding edu-
cationalexperiencetoourstudents,high-qualitycaretoourpatients,outreachtoourcommunity,andbreakthroughsinresearch. Still, our faculty, staff, and students were busier than ever. Some of our suc-cesses from the previous year include: • theimplementationofarevisedPharmDcurriculumthatpromisesto prepareourgraduatestomeetthemorecomplexmedicalneedsofthe patients they serve • theawardingofnearly$3millioninstimulusfundsforresearchon comparative effectiveness, substance abuse, infectious diseases, and drug delivery • effectivelyadvocatingforexpandedimmunizationlegislationand for legislation regulating medication therapy management in assisted living facilities • theformationofaCenterforDrugSafetytoimprovepublichealth byenhancingthesafetyofmarketedmedications • thesecuringoffacultyandstudentpracticesitesinMontgomery County to support the School’s program at the Universities at Shady Grove
• steadyprogressonPharmacyHallAddition,whichisontracktoopen for the start of classes in August Itisimportantforustohonorthelegacyofexcellenceestablishedbyouralumni and to continue the momentum you have so firmly created for us. With thatgoalinmind,weembarkedonanambitiousstrategicplanningprocessin January2009thathasproducedaremarkablefive-yearplan.Thisnewstrategicplan, unveiled in this Annual Report on page 27, sets a strong course for the SchoolofPharmacyoverthenextfiveyears.Focusedontheareasofeducation,practice, research, environment, and entrepreneurship, the plan outlines very specificgoalsfortheSchooltoachieve.Fromutilizingbestpracticesineducationalmethodologies and instructional technologies to implementing practice models thatarefinanciallycompensatedtoadvancingournationallyrecognizedresearchprograms in drug discovery and development and health services, the 2010-2015 strategicplancapitalizesonthepromiseofPharmacyHallAdditiontoimproveeverythingwedosothatweachieveatopfivenationalranking. With input from every group in our School community—faculty, staff, students, alumni, Board of Visitor members, and preceptors—the launch of the strategic plan is the perfect impetus for all of us to rededicate ourselves to fulfilling our mission of leading pharmaceutical education, scientific discovery, patient care, and community engagement in the state of Maryland and beyond. Ithankallofyoufortheroleyouplayedinoursuccessthispastyearandforyour involvement in creating our new strategic plan.
