Afterasuccessful2005-06season,theColby-Sawyermen’sbas-ketballteamlookstoseveralof itsyoungmembersaswellasthefewremainingoldguardmemberstoonceagainleadtheChar-gerstoaCommonwealthCoastConferencetitle.
LastseasontheChargersamasseda17-11overallrecordandfinishedwiththesecondbestrecordintheCCCat13-3.Lastseason’ssquadof talentedplayers,includingESPNAcademicAll-AmericanandNABC2ndteamAll-AmericanAndrewSt.Clair,pushedtheChargersdeepintotheconferencetournament.TheChargersdefeatedSalveReginaandGordonontheroadintheopeningroundsof tournamentplaybeforefallingpreytoEndi-cottinthechampionshipgame,65-56.
“Welostalotof experience,”saidHeadCoachBillFoti,whobe-ginshis15thseasonatthehelmof theChargermen’sbasketballteam.“Thisyear’steamisthemostinexperiencedteamwehavehadsincemyfirstyearhere.”
ButCoachFotiandtheChargersaresuretheyhaveplentyof weaponsjoiningandreturningthisseasontohavetheteamcompeteforaleaguetitle.Nineplayersfromlastyear’steamreturnthisseason,bringingwiththemdrive,determinationandtalent.
“Weknewwehadatalentedseniorclassandrecruitedwiththatinmind,”saidCoachFoti.“Wealsohavealotof abilityinthefreshmanandsophomoreclasses.Allof ourfreshmenareverytalented,butthelearningcurveisgoingtobesteep.Wehaveonlytwoguysontheteam(JoshCarterandTylerFournier)whohaveplayedtwoormoreyearsforus,soweareyoung.”
LeadingthewayfortheChargerswillbethethreeupperclassmen:seniorsTylerFournier(Westbrook,Maine),NateTruncellito(Man-chester,N.H.)andjuniorJoshCarter(Salem,N.H.).
SeniorcaptainTylerFournierwillprovideleadershipfortheChargersattheguardposition.“Tylerisatremendousdefender,”saidCoachFoti.“Hehasbeenaggressiveoffensivelythispreseasonandwecanlookforhimtoscore.”
FellowseniorNateTruncellitowhotransferredlastyearfromNewHampshireTechnicalInstitute,isexpecttomakeanimpactaswell.
“Nateisabig,physicalguardwhocandefend,pass,handletheballandshoot,”saidCoachFoti.“Hegivesusaphysicalperim-
eterkidwhohasanall-aroundgame.”
Theonlyjuniorontheteam,JoshCarter,hasbeenapartof themixthepasttwoseasonfortheChargersandlookstoberightinthemiddleof thingsagainthisseason.
“Joshhasbeenourbestpasserthelasttwoyearsandisaveryskilledoffensiveplayer,”saidFoti.“Heisthebestballhandlerontheteam.”
Theunderclassmencontingentof theChargersteamthisseason,11playersinall,providethetalentandpotentialCoachFotiandhisstaff plantousetotaketheChargerstothetopof thenorthdivisionof theCCC.
“Ithinkwehavetalent,butitmighttakeuslongertoestablishrolesandfigureoutwhatwehave.Wehavethetalent,Iknowthat,”saidCoachFoti.
SophomoresMattLemieux(Manchester,N.H.),RyanMurray(Killingworth,Conn.),PatMcKinnon(Goffs-town,N.H.),AndrewCousins(SouthPortland,Maine)andDuncanSzeliga(Newmarket,N.H.)bringwiththemaseasonof growthintheColby-Sawyersystemandlooktocontributeevenmorethisseason.
“Someof theseguyswereinalogjambehindlastyearssenior’s,butwithextendedminutesthisseason,manyof themwillhaveachancetoshowtheirtalent.”saidCoachFoti.
“MattLemieuxhashadagoodpreseasonandisaplusdefender.Heisanaturalleaderandwillseetimeonthecourtinthatrole.
“RyanMurrayisagoodreboundereventhoughheisundersized.Hisaggressivenessandstrengthmakehimatoughinsideplayer.
“PatMcKinnonhasbeenslowedbyaleginjurythispreseasonandwearewaitingforhimtocomebacktoseewhathecandoforus.
“AndrewCousinsisaverygoodshooterandisdevelopinganall-aroundgame.Hegotsqueezedoutlastseasonbecauseof ourseniorsbutiscapableof makingabigjumpforusthisseason.
“DuncanSzeligaisanextremelyaccomplishedoffensiveplayer,”saidCoachFoti.“Hehasgreatback-to-the-basketmovesandhecanshootthethree.If heimproveshisdefenseandrebounding,hecouldbeanall-conferenceplayer.”

SixfreshmenjointheChargersthisseasonandseveralof themlooktomakeanimmediateimpact.
Threemembersof Barre,Vermont’sSpauldingHighSchool,ChrispatrickCox,JustinRouleauandJonChaloux,alongwithAn-drewTracy(Ellsworth,Maine),WillClemmerandDavidRosso(Wilmington,Vt.)willprovidetheChargersprogramwiththetalenttheyneedtocompeteinadifficultconference.
“ChrispatrickCoxistheruggedrebounder/postdefenderthisteamneeds,”saidCoachFoti.“Whenheishealthy,hewillhaveamajorimpact.Hisskillsetiswhatwearelookingforandneed.
“JustinRouleauisatoughkid.Weneedtofindhiscomfortspot,butheisagooddefenderandaveryhardworker.
“JonChalouxisaverytalentedplayer.HewastheGatoradePlay-erof theYearinVermontlastyearsoweknowhecanperform.
“AndrewTracycanplaybothsidesof theball,andoncehegetsusedtoourdefense,hewillbeagoodplayerforus.
“WillClemmerisabig,strongkidwithagreatworkethic.Hehasagreatfutureinourprogram.

The2006-07schedulealsoholdsplentyof perilfortheChar-gersastoughnon-conferenceactionwillhittheChargersearly.GamesagainstSpringfield,Brandeis,BowdoinandPlymouthStateareallonthescheduletostarttheseason.
Adifficulttaskliesaheadof theChargersinCommon-wealthCoastConferenceactionaswell.Gordon,thepreseasonfavoriteintheNorthDivision,received57firstplacevotesintheD3Hoops.compreseasonpoll,leavingthemjustout-sidetheTop25.

lastMarch.
Lastseason,EndicottCollegedefeatedColby-SawyerCollege,
65-56,intheconferencechampionshipgame.Elevenof the
12conferencecoachescompletedthisyear’sadditionalpollto
pickthe2007ChampionshipGameparticipantsandtitlewin-
ner,withGordon(ninepickedtobeintitlegameandtowin
thechampionship)andRogerWilliams(fivepickedtobein

programasoneof thepremierteamsintheCommon-wealthCoastConferenceandtheNewEnglandregion.CoachFotiranksamongtheall-timecoachingleadersinthenationandhasguidedtheprogramtodouble-digitwintotalsineachof his14seasons,includingseven20pluswinseasons.
LastyeartheChargersfinishedwiththesecond-bestrecordintheCCCwitha13-3markinconferenceplay.TheChargersadvancedtotheleaguechampionshipgameafterdefeat-ingSalveRegina63-48andGordon67-51ontheroadbeforefallingtoEndicottintheChampionshipgame,65-56.
UnderCoachFoti’sdirectionColby-SawyerhasclaimedthreeCCCchampionshipsandthesubsequentautomaticbidstotheNCAAtournament.HehasalsoguidedtheChargerstosevenEasternCollegeAthleticConferencetournamentappearances,winningtheNewEnglandChampionshipafterthe1997-98season.
CoachFotihasearnedfourCCCCoachof theYearawardsandearnedhis200thca-reerwinduringthe2001-02season.HehasledtheChargerstovictoryin73percentof theirgames,apercentagethatrankshim12thall-timeamongactivecoachesinDivisionIIIandrankshim10thamongDivisionIIIcoachesof alltime.TheChargershavereacheddouble-digitwinsinconferenceplayeveryseasonunderCoachFoti,compilinga131-18all-timeleaguemark.
In1992-93,hisfirstseasonatColby-Sawyer,CoachFotiledtheChargerstoa16-9mark,a10-winturnaroundfromthepreviousseason.TheimprovementwasthelargestturnaroundintheNewEnglandregionandthethirdlargestturnaroundinthenationthatyear.

AftertwoquickwinstostarttheseasonagainstMaine-MachiasandHusson,Colby-Sawyerpickeduptwoconferencewinsbeforetheholidaybreak,headingintotheNewYearwitha4-3recordoverall,andaperfect2-0inCCCplay.
Inthenewyear,theChargersstruggledearly,droppingfivestraight.TheChargerscaughtfireafteralosstoGordonandrattledoff sixstraightwinsagainstconferenceopponents,finishingthemonthof January10-8.Febru-arybeganwithanotherGordonlossthathadthesameeffectasbefore;aChargerswinningstreak.ThistimetheChargerswentonafivegamewinstreaktocloseouttheregularseason.
